'Kill switch' removes incentive to steal smartphones - Chicago Tribune

Senate bill would require smartphone

Do you see any negatives of having a kill switch to your cell phone if it gets stolen? One negative that I can see is phone prices will go up if kill switch was installed.

Other than that, I would be all for that. I have one friend of mine who is a senior citizen with a Note 3. I see a lot of senior citizens in my family and customers who have iphones. Kill switch would work well if they ever got robbed.

I understand that people who have a lower end phone may not want to pay for kill switch on cell phone.

I wonder if kill switches will be mandatory on higher end phones or all types of phones? Or can customers have option to pay for that addition if they wanted it?

Well, that's what I have AVG Antivirus for-- to safely wipe and secure my info so it's not viewable to anyone but myself. All my mobile electronics have that feature.

AVG Antivirus is not kill switch, so it is software to wipe the data remotely and help you to guide the phone if lost or stolen.

Kill switch means PERMANENTLY disable the phone and render as useless, just like cheap phone toy.

You may never know if your stolen phone has wiped off or not, but if Sim card is removed so it may not wiped or locked at all.

The kill switch will not work if one is smart enough to cover smartphone with lead or something like that around it (Intend to prevent from signal reaching to phone to activate the kill mechanism) fast enough and they sell overseas making kill switch a moot point.

All carrier supported that, but the problem is cost and have to work with every law enforcement department around the world is next to impossible.

And that's why it never leaves my sight.

Whatever someone stole your mobile then go to website to trace mobile then wipe date off. It looks like that.

Oh wow, attempt to take iPhone from stranger's hand = death penalty in my state because stranger can shoot thieve to death and they can immune to criminal charge due to SYG.

And for the record-- I never take my phone out in certain areas-- I leave it where I know no one can reach it-- during the winter, my front coat pocket, and NOT in my pants. As for spring and summer, I'm usually more careful.

I know where that's at. It's near Sheffield.

work with every LEO agency around the world? what for? who cares about the other countries? I'm not concerned about it.

this is about America. stick with that.

You? Oh you, not again! You don't understand my point and my point is clear and loud. I don't care about other countries. My point is many of stolen smartphone will be sold overseas, how could kill switch going to stop that? You aren't thinking in terms of preventive action. The idea of kill switch is to prevent from criminal stealing it and selling to others, the idea of kill switch is to make stealing a smartphone less attractive. The truth is opposite is true, thieves will not stop from stealing because they can sell overseas where kill switch won't be activated.

many stolen smartphone will be sold overseas? really? says who?

btw - that's not what you said before. and now you're saying something entirely different. 2 different points.

Why should I do homework for you? DO your OWN homework!

in other word.... you have nothing to back your claim. I knew something was fishy about your claim.

in case you didn't know - if you've made a claim, then you should back it up. I don't believe your claim and it's your job to back up your claim. "many stolen smartphones will be sold overseas"? yea righttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!

Stolen iPhones And Other Smartphones Have Become A Nationwide Problem
In addition, CTIA officials said carriers are expected to launch individual databases later this month to permanently disable a cell phone reported stolen. The initiative is similar to a successful decade-old strategy in Australia.

apparently a kill-switch law works very well for Australia and I don't see any problem with this law for America. this is certainly not a cost-prohibitive thing to do.

I thought their technology wasn't compatible?

more and more smartphones are compatible with any (or most) technology in the world. my iPhone is a world phone. it works just fine in Canada and France.

but as for other smartphones... it depends on what kind of technology it has. for example - if my American phone is CDMA, then it would work only in country with CDMA technology.
