Just your thoughts and opinion on things.

I am of the opinion that there are WAY too many commercials on TV and that we should watch programming the European way, with the commercials in between programming. It is sooooo annoying when you are watching a movie on TV and every 12 to 20 minutes break it. It ruins ones train of thought and concentration.

I wonder if the commercials and kids lack of concentration are correlated. Just a thought.

That's why reading is much better than TV...kids should read more and watch less TV.

It breaks my heart when I hear people talking about children and adolescents as a grand mass of people with no diversity among them. And yet it is so socially accepted. Imagine if we were talking about the attention span of black people or Deaf people...and yet we constantly and regularly talk about children and adolescents as being this way or that way. For example the earlier complaint about children being rude to their parents. Some children are rude, others are not. Just like some adults are rude and others are not.

It's true that sometimes I was shocked to hear the way some of my classmates in high school talked to their parents, but it was only some of them, and I was the same age as them and would never have thought of talking to my parents the same way. And there are some parents that talk horribly to their children.

I hope one day people of all ages--from infants to the elderly--can be seen as individuals just as many people in the middle of the age range are seen. I hope one day that attributing various negative or positive traits to age is seen as equally absurd as attributing those traits to a certain race or other group of people.

there's always a good reliable solution for this type of unacceptable behavior - boot camp aka boarding school :mad2:

yep -- and that's exactly where my children will go if they *ever* treat me in a disrespectful manner. my parents never put up with it from me and i won't put up with it from my children, either.

I will expect my children to respect me, but I will also respect them. I will not demand respect that I don't give.

that's cool nika, but just because i choose to send my children off to boarding school does not mean i am disrespecting them. in my opinion, i am doing what's best for them by helping them change an unwanted behavior, but that's just me and i know all of us have different parenting styles.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to imply you would be disrespecting your children. But I do see it with a lot of adults where they abuse children expect respect in return. Not that it is all people, but when I see this dynamic, it really shakes me to the core.

oh, okay. i can understand that. <smile> i would *never* abuse my children (emotionally or physically) and would always try to work things out first, but as a last resort, boarding school would be an option. i should have made that clear in my last post. sorry about that!

Does anyone ever see a rude child as just a rude person that happens to be a child? In the same way we see a rude adult as a rude person that happens to be an adult?

not always. i think some children deliberately disrespect their parents just to spite them while other children (for example, those with mental illnesses) can't always help their angry outbursts. there are too many factors that determine why a child acts the way they do. (for example, being emotionally, sexually or physically abused, being spoiled, etc.).

I agree Hear Again, but I think the same applies to adults. Some adults act angrily because they are in a tough situation or have a mental illness or whatever other reason. But when that person acts rudely in the store, and people comment on it, do they say "what a rude (wo)man!"? Or do they say "Oh, adults nowadays, they're so rude"?

Do you see the difference?

i don't really see the difference only because children don't always know the difference between right and wrong -- or at the very least, they are not taught that difference. adults, on the other hand, *do* understand the difference and have the ability to act accordingly.

by the way, whenever i've had conversations with people about rude members of the general public, their comments usually center around that one individual rather than labeling adults as a whole. i'm sure what you've described does happen, but i just don't see that very often.

It's that step to a generalization that I am pointing to. The reason for rudeness can be whatever reason, but what I constantly see is that when an adult is rude, s/he is a rude individual, whereas when a child is rude, a generalization is made about how children are rude.

I kinda prefer commercials for bathroom breaks and quick trips to kitchen or whatever. I can understand why you don't like it. The commercials is what make tv programs free (aside from cable, etc). People in Europe have to pay to watch tv programs. No pay, no tv.

now i understand your point. in that case, i agree that people make too many generalizations about children, but i'm guilty of doing the same thing. (it's a hard habit to break!)

but we still have those frequent commercial breaks on paid cable too. the only difference with free cable is that you only have like 7 channels. paid or free cable make no difference in frequency of commercial shows. :mad2:
