my friend has a 1 year old jack russell terrier/chihuahua mix that she recently got last week. he's nice with the women, but will growl, bark, and bite at any male he sees. every time my friend's boyfriend gets close to her, the dog will get defensive and growl (sucks when they have sex because the dog will go BESERK). one time, my friend had friends over, 2 guys and 2 girls. the dog bit both boys! but with the girls, he was affectionate and cuddly

he even obeys my friend every time she tells him to do something.. but not her boyfriend! he will bark at him if he orders him around. lol this makes my friends bf jealous because he loves to be in charge

:hmm::confused:

Wirelessly posted (sent from a smartphone. )

That depends. Some dogs will growl and bark at a specific type of guy but are friendly to most others. It might indititate that the dog was abused by one of these guys in the past. I wont be surprised that a dog will prefer men over women as well.

It is often based on gender of the dog (or any animal). They often relate more to those of the opposite sex. Difference in voices.

That's my initial thought too. If he is already a year old, he probably was abused by a man in the past.

Yes, it is possible. It may be that this dog has had limited exposure to males, or that a male in his past mistreated him (it could be just one experience). My dog was somewhat shy of men at first, especially my brother because he came home from college the first time since I got the dog and the first few minutes of being home he dropped a large box that had pans in it, lots of noise and the dog was scared. Took a bit for the dog to trust him after that. Now she prefers my mom and I, but she likes my dad and brother and other guys too.

It is possible for a specific characteristic to set them off too - like glasses, or beards, or hats. Something new and unusual.

I purchased my female Pomeranian at 8 weeks old....she does wonderful with my 3 boys and any female friends....but men?...Nope!...She will try to "nip" their leg....Seems to be a "protection" issue....

This what I am thinking too! A dog can act the same way toward women if they where abused by a women. Marty is timid around people men and women he will back away if someone go up to him to fast. I heard of dogs being afraid of men wearing hats and once they take the hat off the dog it OK.

i agree.. i think the dog might have been abused by its previous owner. poor thing.. it's the cutest dog ever :( i'll post a pic of him here after the next time i see my friend

Another possibility is that the dog thinks other males are competition...

Maybe he was mainstreamed by men.... nah... jk!

I have known many dogs who have a preference for a particular sex or even race or age group. Silly dogs.

Not just dogs, I know a lot of people who have parrots who prefer one person over another. Rabbits, ferrets, and cats also, but probably less than parrots and dogs.

I suppose we all have our preferences. My silly fish swim to the front of the tank when they see me, but not my husband. Why? I feed them. He does not. I did not think that their primitive brains could know this, but PAH!

When you think about it, It's highly likely the male that will abuse the dog so yes it's common for dogs to be afraid of males because of that. I have worked at dog boardings, vet clinics, and grooming salons for many years and that is common. My girlfriend is a dog groomer at a vet clinic. She often comes home and tells me how she was the only one that could touch an aggressive dog because she's a woman. We actually have a great dane at home that was abused previously by its owner (a man). It's been 5 years and he is still afraid of men. BUT we do have a guy friend that comes over a lot and he is mostly fine with him now because I'm sure he's thinking "Okay he has been here every week for 2 years, I don't think he's going to hit me". So it will take time for your friend's dog to get used to her boyfriend.

dogs who have not been socialized to various people will often display more affection or familiarity with women vs. men. Dogs raised by women, or who only see women in their daily lives will often be more concerned about men. Dogs sense difference in sex and gender and in the U.S., human males are still socialized "masculine" such that often is a difference that a dog perceives. Men < as a group in the United States - not accounting for individual variance> often have deeper voices, more powerful/assertive body language, step differently and so on. Dogs know this.
Sometimes, dog are more affectionate toward one sex or one person than the other because of past abuse - but not always an accurate assumption.

I had a boyfriend that had German Shepherd and my boyfriend told his dog was not very protected of him and this bothered my boyfriend. I took the dog for the day and had to get some gas and when the guy started to walk up to my car to see how much gas I wanted to buy the dog being growling
loudly at him! I could hear the dog! The dog was VERY protected of me, the guy did not want to fill my car up!! I think the dog knew my boyfriend could take care of himself as he was very "masculine"!

Oh yea!...I had a 55 gallon tank, full of fish, and every night I came home, they all swam to the front of the tank...and I knew all their names...:)giggle:)....even my 2 Cocktiels would dance back and forth whenever they saw me....my dog would run around in circles...and the cat?...very stand-offish...as to say "where the heck have you been?"...my way of thinking is "their" way of thinking..."It's TREAT TIME!"...And of course they all got one!
