Japan unveils Izumo, its largest warship since World War II

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) has taken delivery of the Izumo, the largest Japanese military vessel to see service since World War II.

The warship was unveiled at a ceremony at the Yokusuka naval base near Yokohama, also home to the U.S Navy's Seventh Fleet.

The Izumo has a crew of 470, and with a standard displacement of 19,500 tones (24,000 tonnes at full load, according to military publication Jane's), it is as large as the storied Yamato-class aircraft carriers which battled U.S. naval forces in the Pacific theater of World War II.

The wreck of one of the two Yamato-class carriers, the Musashi, was discovered early in March 2015 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

At 241 meters (791 feet) in length, the Izumo is 51 meters (167 ft) longer than the Hyuga, another helicopter carrier which was, until now, the MDSF's largest vessel.

Violating the Constitution?

Regional neighbors and rivals questioned the legitimacy of such a ship for purely defensive purposes, pointing out that, due to its size and deck configuration it could be repurposed as an aircraft carrier -- a class banned under Japan's pacifist constitution.

"The Izumo proves that Japan has the technical capabilities and demand to develop aircraft carriers. It's also possible that Japan may explore the possibility during the Izumo's service," Li Jie, a Beijing-based military expert, told the Chinese state-backed Global Times newspaper.

However, Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told reporters in Yokohama that the MSDF did not intend to use it in this way.

"We are not thinking about using this as an aircraft carrier," he said, saying that the lack of hangers and service bays, along with a deck unsuitable for takeoffs and landings, meant that the Izumo wasn't designed for fixed-wing aircraft.

He said that it needed to be as large as it is so it could host joint operations and act as a command center. He insisted that the new addition to Japan's maritime forces was designed for peaceful purposes.

"The vessel can serve in a wide range of roles including peacekeeping operations, international disaster relief and aid."

I like it. It is not in violation.

Also, it cannot be converted to an aircraft carrier. You would have to tear it completely apart because there is no arresting gear or catapult systems. They are installed in lower decks with their own power systems. Plus, Japan does not have any carrier designed aircraft (landing gear that can handle the stresses of landing and takeoff).

Correct me if I am wrong. Since the end of WWII, Japan agreed not to make any weapons like air force, warships, etc. How do they defend the country in case of NK attack? I suspect that our taxes are paid to protect them, correct?

Edited; I am sure that Japan pays for our armed security service. However, Japan is no longer a threat to the world, isn't it time for them to build their own?

Japan and Germany can only have a self-defense force. They are still in effect. US and other allied countries are to come to Japan's defense in case they are attacked. There are talks going on right now to lift the ban due to occasional threats from N Korea and China. China has been harassing the Philippines and Japan over disputed islands. Japan does not have any fighter aircraft, only anti-submarine patrol planes. They do have a good number of destroyers, frigates, submarines and minesweepers.

Wow, that's good info. Thanks for sharing. You know the past is the past.

it maybe my eyesight but looking at dimensions with sailor on deck it don't look that big if comparing to other war ships
I also thought japan barred from making any war ships or nukes

I belive a few months ago japans diet (parliment) passed a resolution that allows japan now to have a military for defence as well as offence. Its also believed that as of today, japan is 2 weeks away from a functional nuclear bomb if japan so decided to make one.
In other words. While japan does not posses a nuke. If it choose it could assemble one and have it ready in 14 days. It is belived missing american plotonium that was on loan (cant remember the details. google it ) to japan and vanished is the material that could be used or has already been used for developing weapons grade material.
japan has been working very hard to get some teeth for the inevetible coming war with china. I dont think japan will be an easy fight For china either.
Bonzai!!!!!!
Gonbatte!!!!

What bothers me is that is what China wants Japan for. It has plenty of land over there. What's more, China wouldn't dare to take Japan because of USA. Same thing with NK. They are thinking about taking SK and Japan but they can't do it.

China is waiting.for the americans to finnaly leAve, which will happen. thats why the americans have been working hard to help japan get her military up. Its inivitible a war will occur..its just a matter of time now...

imagine all the people living for today imagine no countries imagine all the people living for today nothing to kill or die for..just dreamer but I not the only one.
I wonder what yoko thinking

I don't think so because once China invades Japan, China will be vanished in a few days. That's what NK is scared of. USA is like "Go ahead and do it, you will go down."

Japan lost 4 aircraft carriers at Midway and was a turning point of the war in the Pacific. Japan never recovered from that battle throughout the war.

what? why would China take over Japan and South Korea? that's just ridiculous.

they would claim some disputed islands by force but take over a country? lol not for probably centuries.

working so hard to help Japan get its military up? no. they don't need American's help. look at them.... extraordinary high-tech and wealthy. China's armament is laughable.... relics from cold war and leftovers from Russians. sure they have some new cool toys but do they really work? LOL

recently, there has been some political movement calling for offensive-type rearmament to convert JSDF (Japanese Self-Defense Force) into "full-scale military" due to rising threat from China and North Korea.

you really do want America to fall, eh?

not really. South Korea will immediately fall if North Korea attacks even with 20,000+ Americans stationed in SK.

have you ever heard of any full-scale invasion that would be over in just a few days? Americans will not be able to help South Korea for several months or even years.

no matter what fancy cool high-tech weapons we have.... you still need to put the soldiers on ground and North Korea greatly outnumbers both South Korean and American troops by like millions.

I can't really imagine how China will vanish in a few days since it's the #1 most populated country and an extremely large Asian country. nukes? not gonna happen. conventional war is the only way to fight and Americans can't do diddly squat unless somebody's throwing a nuke.

....... and China has been around for... lol over 4,000 years... so yea it ain't gonna just "vanish" lol
