Any ideas for this set up -

Person has a spare computer. Person has a static IP broadband internet.

How do I set up a webcam service that only the person can access. Also the computer needs to be able to be able to host a PHPBB forum.

So, it will do this: When I am at a remote location I can securely login onto the server - See webcam (live or snapshots, whichever is better), access forums.

Operating systems and such - doesnt matter. What's the best way to get this done?

It's 3:22 am... ? why don't you get to bed dude... it's late and worry about it all tomorrow when you had a good night's sleep.

You'd be amazed at the results. :D

1. obviously I would say go install LAMP because it will meet all of your needs but I don't know Linux well so I'll have to say go install WAMP. PHPBB will work on either OS

2. for webcam - you need to install program for that. You can also use remote desktop to control webcam

3. I asked my friend who is a network security. for secured login - register with port forward and dyndns. and then install ssh daemon

I'm thinking of a LAMP. Just never set up a phpbb database off the machine. Only a hosted package. I'm pretty comfortable with Linux. (I have Ubuntu on my desktop)

So I'd make a webserver out of the LAMP - test on my desktop - then make a simple website with webcam and a phpbb setup?

Pretty weird thinking I am using my gaming desktop as a webserver. At least it will be very quick.

If you install LAMP - it's already all set up (well some minor configurations) and ready for you to install phpbb. but webcam? I don't know but should be easy to get it done. Hope there's linux driver for it!

There is no webcam that can support for linux, but I recall purplecatty have a driverless webcam that works well on linux...I think

Hey! You mentioned me!! Driverless Webcam.. Yeah, Logitech Vision Pro.

There are plenty of info about Webcams that works with Linux.

here's the website::

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams

This site tells you which Webcams works or not.. Check this out..

Most important thing is that you should find ANY Webcams that are driverless. I do know Logitech is the top of the line webcam. This takes out hassle trying to install webcam driver for Linux. If devices can operates on MAC, It'll work with Linux

Worth a try!

I'm Ubuntu user too.

HAHAHAHAHA! So funny considering that you said, "Take it for what its worth.. I took quite a few networking classes and such. Yes, I do have some CISCO engineering under my belt." and you're asking those questions? Did you ACTUALLY finish those classes? :)

I happen to have 7 security cameras and they'll all run on different platforms. Doesn't take much background in networking to set up.

Get a router, map an IP port for each camera via router homepage, download webcam software and install them. Configure. Done. Can remote cams from iPhone or my primary PC.

You don't want to think? Looks like you're just making an excuse. :)
