Is this true about Gallaudet?

The deaf students I work with at the college where I went to grad school have to take an average of 1 year developmental work in math and English. Virtually all of them came from the mainsteam. The interesting thing is, approximately 77% of hearing college freshmen have to take an average of 1 year developmental work in math and English, as well. Says more about the quality of education in the mainstream than anything else.

My son, if I may use him as an example, entered hearing college without needing developmental courses. He attended a deaf school with a bi-bi focus.

I agree with that.

Why do students want to graduate at Ivy League but they do not want to graduate at Gallaudet?

Who says students do not want to graduate from Gally? I'm hearing, and I would have been proud to be accepted to their graduate school. It just wasn't feasible for me to relocate at the time.

I won't answer until you rewrite your question

Why do students want to graduate at Ivy League but they do not want to graduate at Gallaudet?

People thinks it a good school.

You graduated from Gally because your language is ASL, NOT English.

English is your second language. But my hearing college let me pass too and I can be horrible at English if I am not careful.

I did not see any students failed college english courses at gallaudet because it was easy to pass course. But in major is different story, those female strict teachers can give you hard time if you show your english is terrible or no commit in class, some students who are in major and frustated with continuing their major because of teachers did not like what students write of this way. I know that strict teacher wil fail students if they did not meet their standard, will correct lots of error on grammar affect on grade but not look what you imrpess your paper. I already have met some strict teachers but never take their classes before. most of my teachers are nice and let me passed english courses.

Then they weren't good teachers.

Why do students want to graduate at Ivy League but they do not want to graduate at Gallaudet?

Who says students must graduate at ivy league schools? NOBODY !! And, nobody is ashamed of graduating from Gallaudet. Why are you attending there if you're ashamed of it ?

Give us a straight answer.

Graduate school do not care if my english is...but important to get BA degree then go to get job or graduate school anywhere

Graduate school most definately cares what your English is like. Take a practice GRE (required for admission to a grad program). You will see just how much they care about your English.

And Reba is correct. A major part of grad school is doing research and writing research reports. And they are very, very strict about the writing style and the format.

Then they weren't good teachers.

What?! How do you know?

You insulted gallaudet.

Students resepcted them. I wish it is ivy league but seem only liberal arts and quality of grade on faculty and academics is still improve but it is less than ivy school beat us.

Yep. And MS Word with spell checker and all that jazz isn't going to cut it either. Either you know how to write or you don't. At this level of education, being able to communicate clearly is a very important skill. Who do you think are doing the power point displays...certainly not the one who can't get their English straight!!!

You should figure out how to get quotes right because you posted part of your answer in my own quote.

I didn't understand the rest of your post. That should give you a clue.

I was not surprise that English teachers let students passed english courses at gallaudet.

I have english teachers let me passed but know my english is not enough good in english courses in three years.

eng 102 - fall 2007
eng 102s - spring 2008
eng 103 - fall 2008
eng103s - spring 2009
eng 280 - fall 2009
eng380 - spring 2010

I am too tired to complete english courses.

Gallaudet asked students to take english or they cannot get degree,

I have a friend who went to harvard, was my roommate at CSUN, supposed go harvard but his english is not enough same as me.

You cant tell me if my english is.

NO EXCUSE!!!

You need improve your English skill before enter the graduate school and they DO CARE about English. Your English teacher is not supposed to let you to passed so you should receive F in English course.

My mother graduated from graduate school with master degree in 10 years ago and they are required to have excellent English skill.

Yup, you are obviously correct, same goes to Reba. :thumb:

Yes matajan, rewrite your post if you want to improve your English.

And read books..lots of them

I still struggled my english before I transfer to gallaudet.

because of communication delay and lack of structure of english at school...I passed ACT and essay on my own but take placement test and writing in class at hearing university is tough make me too sleepy and flunk classes, then I transfer to gallaudet.

then Harvard Univ or any universities that is part of Ivy Leagues don't want to accept you.

Even Univ of Alabama too, unless you are going to accept the remedial classes that Univ of Alabama tell you to do so.

I got A on research paper and reports for my classes, one of my course is tough...but got A on paper is not very esay for me think and complete this essay will take one to two weeks.
Do you write differently for class papers than you do for AllDeaf?

Do you write differently for class papers than you do for AllDeaf?

It is just Gallaudet University.

but in hearing universities, you may end up to get poor grade in English course if your English isn't good or not take this course so seriously.

Same goes with community college, I passed remedial class in English with B and research paper that I created about 3 different literatures and went to tutor so often to correct my grammars and check out the literature stories if it is make sense. My English teacher warned to all classmates that incorrect grammars may result in poor grade, especially D or F.

You are seeing the same thing I am, then. Thing is, it is not limited to the deaf students.
No, it's not limited to the deaf students. The main campus runs multiple developmental classes simultaneously, five days a week, 8 a.m. - 9 p.m., except for Friday evenings, each semester. Three other satellite campus sites are equally busy.

i have not take GRE test.

I heard deaf people scared of take GRE.

Hearing people are scared to take the GRE. It is a very difficult exam. But if you want to go to grad school you have to take it.

Same here. And the tutoring center is never empty. Math and writing tutors are booked for weeks ahead.

And I find that spell checkers are useless when you have to use professional terms in the writing. I can't tell you how many times it has told me a well accepted and widely used psych term is misspelled when it isn't.
