Is this true about CIs

Deaf children with CI's CAN play many sports. Rough sports are restricted for the reason I mentioned. I have a CI, and I play soccer, volleyball, golf, I ski, swim, bike, rock climb and skate.

Yes I SKATE!!! On ICE!! I don't play hockey but I do enjoy ice skating. You can be challenged by sports without them being physically rough.

Nowhere is anybody suggesting that a child with a CI can't get involved in sports, but that restriction from CERTAIN sports that can harm the CI itself is recommended.

And PLEASE - do you have to resort to name calling and four-letter words to get a point across?

A child can't be killed because they play football.

You don't know that certain do you? I don't think so. The helmet protects the skull but it doesn't protect the soft tissue of the brain and football is much more aggressive sport.

and Yes, kids have die from playing sports, due from injuries and personal medical reason like heart failure.

Dont want to start false info or whatever but I want to ask you if this is true or not before starting this discussion.

My friend who lives in another state told me that one Deaf school there wont have a traditional football team anymore in 5 years so the athletic director is making plans to change it to soccer. I was like why? My friend said cuz of more deaf children with CIs and that they are not allowed to play football. At that school, about 95% of the current elementary age boys have CIs so when they reach high school, there wont be enough boys for a football team.

Is that true that children with CIs cant play football?

Yeppers. St. Rita already switched ffrom football to soccer.

Is soccer a big thing in Europe, right? American football is a huge thing here and I cant imagine some Deaf boys who love sports and dream to play football but cant due to their CIs?

According to my friend, the male Deaf people in that area are saying "Just leave Deaf people alone and use ASL because ASL doesnt limit us." That is the word being spread around. It hasnt reached here in MD yet. Again, I dont know if it is more false info to bash CIs or not. :dunno:

And playing sports teaches a child many valuable lessons about teamwork and cooperation.

And they can't learn those lessons when they play basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, and other non-violent sports?

I don't think there's a hard *ban* against sports. I'm diabetic and my doctor tells me not to eat donuts. Doesn't stop me from doing it occasionally :) Jamie Burke wrote a very comprehensive article on this at About.com

Cochlear Implants and Sports

She quotes an ENT saying the only sports he bans is wrestling and kickboxing. If you google "football player cochlear implant" there are several stories about people playing football who have CIs.

and my clinic is constantly getting phone calls about modifying helmets to fit the processor in.

Check with your own physician, your mileage may vary, but I think the risk is very overstated

Considering the number of head injuries that are quite possible, and occur every season, withthe non-implanted population despite the use of protective equipment, it would stand to reason that those risks would be increased in a medically compromised population such as the CI impanted.

And they can't learn those lessons when they play basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, and other non-violent sports?

And what if the child doesn't show an interest in those other sports? Likewise, A CI child could easily be struck with a "bean ball" while playing baseball, be knocked to the floor striking the CI during basketball, be kicked inthe head during a soccer game, etc., etc. The risk is simply greater for the CI child than for the non-implanted child based onthe fact that they are medically compromised. That cannot be denied.

Life is a risk. Unless you want a child to grow up in a bubble, there will be risks. You learn to work around them.

Some risks are inherent in life. Others are created by the decisions others make for us.

I don't understand why CI children can not play football? I've taken my hearing aids off while I was playing sports, why can't they take theirs off too?

It has to do with possible problems with the internal parts that can't be removed.

But a helmet will help to protect their equipment....

It helps, but they are still at risk because a blow to that area would not have to be as forceful to cause injury for someone who has an implant compared to someone who doesn't.

But there's always risk when it comes to playing aggressive sports, my oldest son was on the football team, he end up with a head and neck injury....

What I'm trying to say here is most children do get injury while playing sport, it could be ANY sports...

you may be right but we also need information from manufacturers about degree of risks.. and risks are everywhere for all of us .. I also wonder how many people with a CI got trouble due to hard sportive activities ? where is the statistics ?

Kids with CI can play football if their parents so choose. There is a boy in my community that plays on his 8th grade team.

I specifically asked our surgeon about this because I played football myself and would like Drew to have that opportunity if he wants to play, and our surgeon's opinion was that sports like basketball would be much more dangerous to play than football because of the lack of protective headgear.

Playing football is dangerous, and allowing a person to play is a calculated risk, CI or not. But the biggest danger specifically for CI kids is damaging the device(s) and not physical injury due to having an implant.

Will the internal part caused physical damage to the brain? *curious*

What do you mean how many CI users got in trouble?...

:hmm:

Let's assume there are 1000 CI users...

how many of them got in trouble directly because of a sportive activity like football ?
