Dont want to start false info or whatever but I want to ask you if this is true or not before starting this discussion.

My friend who lives in another state told me that one Deaf school there wont have a traditional football team anymore in 5 years so the athletic director is making plans to change it to soccer. I was like why? My friend said cuz of more deaf children with CIs and that they are not allowed to play football. At that school, about 95% of the current elementary age boys have CIs so when they reach high school, there wont be enough boys for a football team.

Is that true that children with CIs cant play football?

I'm not a CI user, but as far as I know CI users shoud avoid 'hard' sports like soccer cuz any ball hit on the head may harm the magnet part inside the bone or whatever :dunno:

That's why I am asking here before discussing this issue. My friend said that the Deaf school is in uproar over this issue. Many Deaf staff who used to play football are upset because they felt that those kids wont get to experience playing whatever sports they want. Just quoting what my friend said but like I said, I prefer to check to see if that's true that CI users cant play some sports.

Do you mean American football? (I confused those language between British and American...)... If yes, I can image it must be risk if they play American football... I really has no experience for that in real life but diver and plane.

Like what Highlands say... no hard sports...

All what I know from my own friends is:

For Diver - must be limited, it should not deep...

Also for plane as well - I remember that my friend got pain with her CI when she was on the plane. If you want to travel oversea then you have to check with doctor/Audioist first and check & do something with CI level...

That means Deaf schools all over wont have football (American) teams anymore? That is gonna be interesting to see...

I am thrilling to learn about this, too... since I has no idea about this & don't have any collection to experience about this in real life but diver and plane... We don't have American football here in Europe but soccer (Europe Football).

I am going to find out about soccer too...

:hmm: prothesises limits our lives at times ..for instance, I need to avoid hard rain cuz I wear hearing aids..

perhaps, non CI deaf teams will continue :dunno:

Is soccer a big thing in Europe, right? American football is a huge thing here and I cant imagine some Deaf boys who love sports and dream to play football but cant due to their CIs?

According to my friend, the male Deaf people in that area are saying "Just leave Deaf people alone and use ASL because ASL doesnt limit us." That is the word being spread around. It hasnt reached here in MD yet. Again, I dont know if it is more false info to bash CIs or not. :dunno:

non CI? with about more than half of deaf kids being implanted these days? There probably wont be enough numbers but even if there are, what about those kids who want to play but cant? I mean, baseball is such a huge thing with the male members in my family so if my brother got a CI and was told he cant play baseball like the rest of the family, I am sure he would feel angry.

Also, I play softball so I take my HAs off when I play due to sweat but with CI magnets, the kids cant take them off so it is a sticky issue isnt it?

yes,CIs have a 'cost'.. but as an adult, I don't mind paying cost for getting a better hearing if I get a CI.. as for children, yes it would be a bit difficult issue..

Yea, not everyone values sports but there are some that do especially if it is a whole family like mine. Sports is a HUGE thing in my family...my uncle used to play pro baseball so if a family has so much value in sports and all play including the deaf child's hearing siblings, the deaf child is more likely to want to do the same. That can cause some anger and resentment issues.

you are right but I rather see the replies of some parents with CI kid like cloggy .

I wouldn't know, but I think someone with cochlear implant that involves in sports would be able to answer that question. ;)

With HAs, it is easy to take off with no problem. But, for CI - that's pretty tough, because of its limitation - not like HAs. CI can harm kids, but not HAs because, once you take HAs off - then, you will have no problem gettin' hurt from it. It's why I opposed. *sigh*

I just want to see kids free from any harm, so they can enjoy their sports anytime they want without worryin' about limit from CI.

I don't think there's a hard *ban* against sports. I'm diabetic and my doctor tells me not to eat donuts. Doesn't stop me from doing it occasionally :) Jamie Burke wrote a very comprehensive article on this at About.com

Cochlear Implants and Sports

She quotes an ENT saying the only sports he bans is wrestling and kickboxing. If you google "football player cochlear implant" there are several stories about people playing football who have CIs.

Hearing Loss News and Articles: Florence assistant coach enjoys a whole new world of hearing

and my clinic is constantly getting phone calls about modifying helmets to fit the processor in.

Check with your own physician, your mileage may vary, but I think the risk is very overstated

Now, you see cochlear implant destroy Deaf student's desire for sports... The parents want them to be hearing as normal. According to unacceptable for their Deaf children because DEAF considers as handicap or disability... Therefore; parents want their Deaf children be normal like them...

What about Deaf children's human right desire to play football or other sports. Cochlear implant intervene their limit play.. That is big SUCKS !!

I am so sick of hearing parents brag around in the community; their children can hear and speak well. What about their true language, explore and unlimited play the sports...

It is so so sad to see many Deaf schools reduce number of Deaf children. Many Deaf teachers lay off their jobs due to insuffience deaf students. Deaf students have no experience to interact with other Deaf students when they enroll Gallaudet, CSNU or RIT. They become too scared how to approach with Deaf people into real world. They (Deaf students) left out of most conversations with CI users or oralism students.

Damn parents, doctors, etc..... They do not think more careful about young babies Deaf's desire in their future... Cochlear implants technologies destroy our next generation deaf children in this community.

That is why, I am very against babies, teenager - young Deaf children get their cochlear implants.... The parents who are not acceptable for their Deaf children for who they are.... :pissed:

That's why I am asking if this is true.

Speaking of sports, what would Andrew think of this since he was passionate about football himself being a fan and a player?

I certainly remembered how much he disappointed to hearing Parents with many Deaf students can't play the football due to dangerous with cochlear implants. It seems not fair because medical oppressive to the parents. CI would be the best benefit for the Deaf children. What about their human right and enjoyful to play the sports?

Andrew was very against CI implant on the small children. He grew up oral but glad that his parents did not get him CI. He played the football until Gallaudet year. Whew....

He can't imagine, CI user play the football. It is very rough and tough sport bang between two heads or tack each other. It is extremely dangerous for the CI user playing the football ! It can kill Deaf child who has CI. :(

Lets drop the melodrama, please. A child can't be killed because they play football. At worst, they might shift their implant, rendering it useless.

You called me melodrama.. {removed by mod}!!! In the fact... without helmets

think about it... How do you feel when a parents put you cochlear implant when you were 12 months old. You did not ask for it... You desire to play field hockey or figure ice skating... You fell down and bang your head against ice rink or bumb against other person's head without helmets...

Do not ever call me "melodrama"... You have a narrow mind of the Deaf children desire for their human right to play hard sports as challenge...

I'm not going to debate this thread with you. The discussion is end !
