There can't be a definitive answer. If you believe in the superstition, you can end up causing your own bad luck through your fear.
 
Yes, it is because bad luck will rain on you and rein you in!
 
Maybe it's a bad idea because of the fact that you might break something. Bad luck? No. Bad Idea? Yes
 
I voted no because I'm not that superstitious. I mean... this is the guy you're talking to who doesn't believe in ghost unless proven :)

I grew up thinking it was bad luck....and have told my boys it was bad luck....So...we never open up an umbrella indoors....
Well, even black cats....whenever one runs across the street while I'm driving, my left hand makes an "X" mark on the windshield.....so I am some what superstitious, yeah I am....
 
No, I think TXG's and mine are the most sensible....:lol:
 
Opening umbrellas indoor, was supposed to bring bad luck as in olden times the umbrella was supposed to be used only as a protection against the sun. Hence, opening it indoors was considered as a mark of disrespect to the sun god.

The only time it's bad luck is if you knock over Ming vases when you open up your umbrella.
 
It would be bad luck for my dog if an umbrella was opened in the house. My dog is afraid of umbrellas ! Don't as me why , I have no idea!

It would be really bad luck if you were in someone else house and knocked over their Ming vases!! It would be very expensive to you too!
