Is CC problems the TV station or my service?

Last time I tried set up OTA with HD for friend in rural area which is 50 miles away from San Antonio, it receive the standard, none HD available.

Choosing the Best TV Antenna for San Antonio, Texas

Your friend should be able to receive a number of channels in HD. You must have done something wrong. It may be your friend's TV though. Analog and digital transmissions are different, your friend's TV may not have the proper TV tuner required to receive the digital transmissions.

Very true. I do not get HD on the one TV I have that uses a analog to digital converter box because of the converter box specs.

Banjo, I'm aware of tv tuner which I have been play around on my HDTV and conversation box with tv tuner. I DID checked on his TV which already have one. Yet, it didn't pick up anything but all standard channels. I'm not kidding.

Even I lend him my 2 different antenna, one is non- and one is powered. It didn't pick any HD channel.

How sure are you about your friend's TV having an ATSC tuner?

I was under the impression that the FCC has mandated all OTA broadcast be in digital format now. At least in the USA. However, just because it's digital does not mean that it is HD. The broadcasting company has the choice of sending a digital signal with standard definition or high definition. But, it's all a digital signal now. Check out The Digital TV Transition: What You Need to Know About DTV.

That is correct.

Our house in the Outer Banks isn't exactly what I would call "rural," but we would get nothing OTA except for one not-very-good university channel from Raleigh. We have to have cable or dish (we chose cable) to get anything at all. So I am not surprised at the comment about friends in rural areas not being able to pick up anything.

oh, just remembered... Digital signals do not carry the signal as far as the old analog did. this is another reason some in rural might not get a picture. Usually you get it or you don't. If you are on the edge, you might get a lot of pixilation.

Is there a lot of highlands surrounding the city of San Antonio?

True.

The station I was referring to just isn't a very good station, as in, does not carry the best PBS shows, has a lot of boring (to me) shows about fishing and so forth. It comes in clearly, but there is rarely anything on it that I want to watch.

My husband says the same thing about HGTV, but what does he know...:laugh2:

That's due to the terrestrial constraints. It affects the digital signal more than the analog signal. Digital signal has always been incredibly sensitive compared to the analog signal.

Which brand over-the-air antenna works for you? I've contact Comcast about the c.c. problems so much I'll soon contact FCC and NAD. The deaf can either keep quiet (and continue to suffer) or fight back against poor c.c. service.

I called Comcast about missing CC on TV shows and they told me it was up to the stations to put CC on their shows, I told Comcast "No it was up to them to make sure there CC" I called FCC and they told me I was right that Comcast should made sure there are CC on the shows! The station called 'This' never has any CC on their shows or movies and this piss me off as 'This' has some good movies that I want to watch. Some actors mumble when they talk and I find it hard to understand them.

Thanks everyone for all the information. i live just outside of Sacramento. We are switching from AT&T tomorrow to Wave broadband. Maybe that might solve all the problems. It hapoens on every channel. Some are a little worse than others like ABC is awful. Their CC has so many terrible typos also. Thanks again everyone. I will let you know if changing companies solve my problem.

I got the same respond from Comcast but hit them back with the re-seller law.
It works like this: Suppose you fill your car's gas tank at a gas station near your home that carries brand XYZ. What happens is the station gets a delivery of gas from a supplier, especially of the station is independently own. Suppose that gas is bad. You have filled your tank with bad gas and soon your motor is in big trouble. What you do is put the responsibility on the gas station because that is from whom you brought a tank of gas. The station is liable to you for your repair bil. The station can file a claim against brand XYZ, if it so wish. But you have nothing to do with XYZ because they did not sell the gas to you, they sold the gas to the station.

Therefore, Comcast buys from the national broadcasters and then sells to you, this is whee Comcast becomes a re-seller. If Comcast does not provide the deaf with the same satisfactory service as they do to the hearing viewers, that is discrimination. This is how I'm taking on Comcast but trying to work through the situation first. If I get no satisfaction, I'll sue.

Update.... Switched from AT&T to Wave Broadband. Seems to have cleared up the problem. Now I have to relearn all the channels and menus. The CC is smaller but so much better.

Interesting. Does AT&T know that is why you switched?

In our Virginia house, we only get OTA tv, and use antennas, so I can't blame lack of captioning on the provider. I do wonder if our converter boxes (which are different brands for each of the two sets where we use them) are responsible for some of the CC problems we occasionally have.

I don't think we have Wave Broadband here. I'm glad that's working out for you.

The main reason we switched from AT&T is because they were rasing their rates up $55 per month with no extra service. What a rip off. We have complained to AT&T about the CC but they never responded. Their loss I guess. I absolutely hate AT&T. Their customer service is awful. Just noticed that CC is working on the commercials also. Never before. We are fine tuning it now I will let you know more after watching it for a while.:hmm:
