I went to new GI specialist at UAB that specialize on IBS.
He told me that IBS is very different from person to other person. He told me that my IBS isn't bad as other people and want me on Flagyl for 7 days to clear any parasites in my intestine. I took antibiotic (Ceftin) to clear any infection in sinus area and made my IBS worse as I suffered from unpleasant cramping and pain for few days after complete the antibiotic. My IBS has went improving slowly and I used peppermint oil capsules as preemptive measurement to avoid cramping or pain from start, however still have some discomfort for limited time. He told me that I need start to take SSRI drugs (except for Viibryd) to keep anxiety under control because I have some psychological disorder that affect my bowel and daily life. It will take 6 weeks for full effective as side effects will go away. He told me that PPI drugs (Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid) could make IBS worse because of some undigested food; and acid is necessary to break the food properly. Sometime, he said there is no choice to stop PPI drugs if heartburn is severe or out of control but not hurt to avoid them by switch to Zantac.
Speaking about diet, I eat regular diet but strictly on time because I can't have late lunch that closer to dinner. I usually eat breakfast at 7 am, lunch at 12 pm to 1 pm and dinner at 6 pm to 7 pm. If lunch was 3 pm so I will skip it. I avoid all bakery goods from groceries, canned meats, canned soups, frozen meals aka TV dinner and pre-packaging (Chip Ahoy, Little Debbie, etc). I usually make homemade dessert and eat in right amount after meal. I usually buy natural foods like potato chips without any additives. There are some local bakery like in my area offer cake that made with real ingredients and no nonsense additives like palm oil, hydrogenated oil, MSG, all craps. Don't eat too much sweet food or could make feel ill, same goes with fatty and oily food too. I just eat fatty food at once per week or none at all. I haven't eat pizza for long time but I could at once per 2 week or month with Lactaid because it doesn't affect my IBS. I'm still be careful about diet and already achieved to keep IBS under control until antibiotic treatment (Ceftin) messed it up.
