Hi All,
I'm trying to arrange to go to Gallaudet for a year next year as a visiting student. Anyone know anyone that has done this? I'm in contact with them now, but they seem to have 2 online applications: an International Student Application (for straight out of high school) and a Visiting Student Application (which is not for international students). I want to visit and finish my degree in Canada.
Thanks,
*EQL*

Hey....no info but ask them which application you should use. Also *high five* on being late deaf but actually going to Gally for a year. That rocks!!!!

*sigh* so apparently this might not be as easy as i thought. I assumed they would have some sort of application for upper year students who want to come study for 1 year because they can't afford to study there for all 4 years. Apparently not. They keep giving me confusing information about CPSO and stuff.. :S
Wish me LUCK!

ok.. more bad news.. apparently i cannot apply for Special Student (Visiting) status as an international student. Let's hope this other department comes through for me!

well good luck. And generally you'll be accepted. There are some deafer then thou folks, but most people will be welcoming. Maybe they don't think of you as a "real" international student b/c you're from Canada.

LOL.. tell that to the admissions dept.. they seem to see me as international :S.. however, thanks for the words of encouragement! I hope to hear back soon from the other CPSO people about going for a year.

I know MANY Canadian students who have gone to Gally. I was going to at one point but decided to try to fix our education system instead ;)

Maybe contact CHS? They may have more information? Perhaps your registrar would be able to help too?

Don't tell them that you want to enroll for only a year. Just apply as if you are going to finish the program at Gallaudet. They will do whatever they can to get you in because it is all about "enrollment numbers". They are not interested in "temporary students". Once you are in, take whatever courses you need then leave after a year.

hmm.. interesting approach.. i'll have to look into it.
Thanks

Haha, I know you are making strides too!

My registrar said to contact them.. not much help. Any of your friends still there?

It's starting to cut it close in time too.. if i don't go i want to share an appartment with a friend, but she needs to know soon so that she can look for other accomodations!

Gallaudet University has International Students Services so perhaps they can help you. their website is Center for International Programs & Services

I can answer your questions since I recently was a visitor to Galladuet last week, I have a business card from Tim Woodford, who is the staff for Office of Admissions but I have to come back here when I land in L.A - I am currently on the plane and the laptop is about to die anytime now.

So the final word from Gallaudet was that I cannot visit as an international student. i am welcome to transfer and finish up my degree, but I would have to write the SATs and my courses may not all transfer over. I guess I will be staying here then :(

Why can't visit as an international student? Just go and visit as a normal person like I did, I was at galladuet as a visitor in mid January last month they took me on a campus tour and took me to observe a class and also discussed with an international consellor too. I have the contact details if you want them, PM me if you wish :)

thanks, but not visit as in a campus tour. "visiting student status" means that you study there for year and the credits count towards your degree at your home school. You study there for a year and return to your own school. They don't allow this with international students apparently. I could go for a campus tour if i want, but not get 'visiting student status'.
