In another thread I said that if a fellow hearie was to say something wrong or hurtful about the Deaf that I would retort with anger. I am reversing my answer. Instead of anger, I'll educate such ones with kindness.

I will say something like this to such ones: "Did you know that even when Beethoven's hearing began to deteriorate significantly, he continued to compose, conduct, and perform after becoming completely deaf? The deaf and hard-of-hearing are as capable and as normal as any hearing person. It is important that you and others understand this; make sure to correct your friends when they say something wrong about Deaf culture now that you know this important fact. Just listen to Beethoven and always remember that he was deaf when he composed, conducted and performed his most beautiful pieces of music."

I truly feel (now) that through kindness that I can gain hearts/minds via gentle correction. Maybe in that way things might slowly harmonize between the two worlds. I'll strive to gain their hearts first: this in turn should change their minds - their thinking and attitudes towards the Deaf.

For the fact is clear, they are cruel because, like children, they simply do not (and yes there are some who are born assholes and are nothing but mean to people as a whole) understand.

Besides who gains anything through anger? Nobody. And what can be said about a person who displays negative resposes? That yes, they are negitive too. Being positive is healthy and it thus can build bridges IMO.

Also this: hearies that know the truth about the Deaf world, in my book, have the responsibility to educate a clueless hearing public. I will do just so via kindness with hopes that such treatment might relay the facts and remove the falsehoods held by their misunderstanding, misconceptions.

Important: this is only in hearie to hearie cases. How the Deaf react is beyond my scope because I am not deaf myself. Therefore I can't speak for the Deaf but I can (must) only as a hearing individual.

Agree or diagree?

I've bitten my tongue for so long, it's numb....Giving someone an attitude adjustment along with a tongue-lashing...does work wonders at times....and I've no regrets about putting someone in their place.

There's nothing wrong for standing up for the deafies. In fact, nobody would be as courageous as you are right now so I acclaim you for that. Yes, I agree - there's so much negativity generated by the open wrath in this world. Anything that can change that - or even put a halt - is our attitudes. Surely we cannot change the way the world is, however, our reactions can.

We should educate each other on the world of Deaf, similarly to educating public that homophobia is strongly condemned. But keep this in your back of mind: there will be people out there who will be always assholes and are hard-heartened so you may not stand a chance of eradicating the hard wall composed of hatred and hostility between them and the Deaf world. In essence, I encourage to educate people about the misconceptions and stigma attached to this world.

In this world - hearing or deaf - there are many issues that public is being educated on: LGBT, poverty, autism, cancer, politics, animal cruelty, et cetera so why not add deafness to that list? After all, education is the key to eliminating - not all, but almost - hate from this world and to instilling love in most people.

Telling someone something and educating something about the truth are two different things IMO. Emotional responses might work (from your experience) on some, but in some cases (I would think) such a reaction can work in the reverse.

I'm not anyone to tell another what to say or do, never. So please take the above for what it's worth. Nothing personal of course. Peace. :ty:

Yes, absolutely! Yet for the sake of the rest allowing those assholes to blur the perception of the good natured folks will greatly influence (to a lesser/greater point IMO) this old conflict between the two sides, mending the hurt on each end...again, to a point.

Agree/Disagree?

Yes, BUT I'm not sure Beethoven is a good example to use. He went deaf DECADES after he became a musician and had auditory memory that allowed him to compose long after his hearing had gone. What of the people who never heard sound or even those who only hear a small portion of the world spectra of sound?

Don't give hearies bullets they can use against you. I believe the only "for sure" way to convince such people is to give us our hearing back through stem cell therapy and watch us crawl out of our biological shells and become like every other person out there.

There should be law that the only vehicles deaf people are allowed to drive are turbocharged and nothing else. Those turbocharged engines are sooooo cool!!! They're special people and should be honored as is :).

Everyone knows the name Beethoven so that's why I should, or maybe not, use his example. Correct me if I am wrong.

Wrong. Beethoven was late deafened.

It's like holding up the speech of a late deafened person as the reason all deaf should be taught by the oral method.

Then wrong I am. I stand corrected. Thank you Bottesini.
