In Your Face....

:gpost: Sounded good to me what you did, Taylor. You got at least one more member of the police department on your side, even though you had to get him to "eat crow."

OK...so this story is now continuing. Myself and the same officer were out working the overlap when a call went out for some sort of dispute between roomates. When I heard the address of the call, I recognized it as a deaf home in our city. I told him that we should take that call and he agreed, not knowing the people there were deaf. It is more or less a group home and two of the roomates were fighting because one guy took money from the others dresser. We went in and seperated the two from arguing....I spoke with one guy who kept denying he did anything wrong but wouldn't tell me what the fight was over.

My partner took the other guy and they went into the bedroom....a few minutes later, my partner walks out with a paper in his hand. Neither one of us could read the guys handwriting and my parter admitted he had no idea what they were fighting about....just that they were fighting.

I then took him into the bedroom and he explained it to me.
A few minutes later I emerge from the bedroom with the basic story. They had been arguing because the roomate took 50 cents from the guys dresser drawer. He wasn't so much as ticked about the money itself but that his roomate stole from him. I also explained the reason he had called the police was because their counselor had left for a dinner break...and he was taught to call the police if a counselor isn't available...and that is why he called.
I was able to get the information for the counselor and our dispatcher called her and she returned from her dinner break.

My partner gave me the same look that he gave me the other night....again, it was another 'in your face' moment. What is surprising to both of us is that in a matter of days, we have had run-ins with the deaf. I also had to explain to my partner that I know very little sign language and had a tough time communicating with the guy....but it was my understanding of deaf culture that pointed me in the right direction to get to the bottom of the problem. When nobody signs and the guy can't communicate via pen/paper (although he was trying), it made for a very sticky situation. I got all of the information I needed using very little signing skill and that is why I pushed for this program the way I did.

BTW, I hope my posts do not appear as bragging....I do, however, take some personal satisfaction that I fought for something that I believed in and it came into being...and now its being somewhat proven to others what I was pushing for was correct.

Now personally, I just need to get my act together and work on my signing skills and then them up to speed. I need to find a tutor with a flexible schedule in my area LOL.
