It sounds like these sites were very helpful to you. Take contradicta's advice and go back to the audie to see if she can help you improve your maps and programs. I would also ask your audie to recommend a good auditory verbal therapist to give you some tips and advice as well.

it worked

Hello there. How recently was your activation date? Hopefully your audiologist is aware of difficulties you have using your processor. Did your audiologist or ENT doctor refer you to a speech therapist? The first moments after activation with a speech therapist are very helpful. Also, what mapped programs did your audiologist program to your processor? Perhaps reevaluating each program for speech emphasis may work better for you. I too had a bit of a strange ride in munchkin land when I was first activated, but just like learning a new task, your brain will adjust and acclimate your hearing to more clearer and truer sounds. Hope this helps.

So glad that that you are happier with things. I'd hold off the pressure on you to get a second implant for now until you are completely at home with the first implant. It does take time to get use to it all - baby steps!

If you feel that the map is too loud then go back and ask for it to be adjusted. I remember one time in the early days I went back to have it turned down and then two weeks later, I was actually ready for a louder map than the map I had considered to be too loud. So going at your own pace is really important.

just wondering about the second ci

 i was just wondering about the ci on the right ear because my doctor told me , people only get one ci because if you have both it would be to loud for the brain to handle. most people get two and im very surprize. so i thought about my right ear in the furture. but i dont really know yet. doc said im losing my hearing on the right ear so it getting worst. i still have my hearing aid on my right ear. my ci is loud but i can also turn it down. so my ci is hearing more and more things around me. i have to order cable for my ci so i can go back learning words again. i have the cable for my computer but they say not to use it because it will fried my brian. my mother been trying to call and order it for me but the people is not answering the phone. well will see what happen. good luck with your surgery on the 31st. thanks:fingersx:

Hi 1buddy,

The advantage of having a second CI is mainly for being able to hear better in noisy situations and also improve sound localisation. It used to be quite rare, but apparently it now accounts for 15% of surgeries and is growing.

It does not necessarily mean that it will be too loud for you, especially if you were used to wearing two hearing aids at one time. What audiologists do is to remap the other CI as well so that they complement each other at a level that is comfortable for you.

And whoever said that the CI listening cable fries your brain is talking rubbish. I have a cable for my ipod and it makes everything sound nice and clear, especially since you can use it in telecoil mode. It would probably help you a lot with the listening practice.

What brand of CI do you have again?

From what I am seeing, bilateral implantation is becoming more and more common. In fact, on another forum, this woman had both done at the same time. She will be activated on the 12th.

IBuddy, do you wear your hearing aid with your CI or no? I am getting activated on the 17th and I wear a hearing aid in my right. I chose to get my worst ear implanted. My audiologist recommended that I stop wearing my hearing aid while my CI gets use to sounds. Who has told about a cable frying your brain?

I am very happy to hear that you are beginning to hear different things with your CI. It shall get better with time. :)

Cool - there are quite a few here with AB processors :)

Contradica has raised a good point. One method of getting your CI ear up and running faster is to turn off the hearing aided ear for at least 2 hours a day to encourage the brain to hook more into the CI ear.

i have the same thing you have and i was told to get harmony processor . my husband buying me a harmony processor because it suppose to have everything, music, telephone, and hearing clearly more then what i have. it gonna cost $850.00 plus i have to trade one of my processer. it gonna be cool. but i do take my hearing aid off to do some testing on words on my ci. it hard to do it with hearing aid.

My doctor at Vanderbilt said that getting both done at one time enables better comprehension. I agree. My left ear had some hearing. I was able to get through the day with my aids. So when I was implanted and activated it allowed me to just "pick up" with the sounds I knew. I am profound - severe so I did not have a lot. So here I am about 3 weeks of activation and I have better hearing than 20 years ago or maybe ever!

I listen to the same 5 songs over and over and look at the lyrics to understand. I can now do almost all the words. I just added two more songs. I practice one ear at a time for at least an hour a day. I am listening to a lot of Elton John because his lyrics are easy to understand and another one is "Down by the river to pray." The beat is easy to pick up.

My CI moment of the day - as I am typing this I'm listening to the ipod on the left side and I hear the phone vibrate on the table.

I want to say this forum is a life saver. I am not around anyone with CI. The only person with a hearing impaired is very anti CI. No one in my family understands - they are supported - so I am so thankful that I found all of you. So thank you!

I am in the same boat as you are. I do not know anyone else that has a hearing impairment, not a single person. My family and friends supports me with getting a CI but they could never understand what I am going through. When my hearing dropped suddenly I turned to these forums and I was glued to them.
