It sounds to me like you should establish or re-establish the relationship with your audiologist, set up mappings or mapping checks, start with therapy and just take the initial steps that you were uncomfortable doing right after the sugery.

Are you saying that you're using a hearing aid now after getting implants, and you don't think you can hear as well with the implants?

It's going to take a lot of time for the implant to work "right" for you. One does not hear with an implant immediately, it takes time for the brain to learn and recognize all the different sounds.

HI GUYS THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY AND MY BRIAIN HEARING THE SOUND. BUT MY HEARING IS NOT HEARING THE SOUNDS LIKE MY HEARING AID. MY HEARING AID , I CAN HEAR CLEARLY BUT NOT THE CI. SO IT KIND OF LIKE MY CI IS DIFFERENT FROM MY HEARING AID. I BEEN BORN DEAF ON THE LEFT EAR AND I LOST MY HEARING ON THE RIGHT SIDE 90% . I HAVE 10% LEFT ON MY RIGHT EAR. IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS A CHILD AND NOW IM OLDER NOW AND IM 36 YEARS OLD. IT JUST IT HARD AND I HAVE TO LEARN ALL OVER AGAIN. IM NOT USE TO HEARING ALL THINGS ON CI AND THE BRAIN IS LEARNING WORDS BUT SOME WORDS ARE FRENCH TO ME.:ugh3:

Hi One way some here have used to train their brains to hear speech is listeing to books on tape while reading the book. If you choose adult books I imagine you'd need to make sure that both the tape and the book are the same (abridged or not abridged) One person actually used childrens books. Hey I should have tried that with Dr. Suess. :) To begin simple books would be best.

I had no problems with speech really so what I did was listened to cd's of favorite singers to get used to music.

Having said that if you have not had a resent mapping it'd be best to go in and do so. They continually work at improving mapping stratagies so they may have more.

Which Implant do you have?

A. Tone down the cap locks, on the net it's considered shouting, so don't use cap locks.

B. Go see your audiologist. They can give you advice in terms of ways to learn to hear with your CI. But a good idea would be to take some children's books like Dr. Seuss and read them out loud to yourself.

C. I thought CI's required several mappings over a year-long period? it sounds like you didn't get all the mappings you needed.

D. CI's do NOT hear like hearing aids do. Hearing aids amplify sounds, CI's are totally different. I'm sure someone with a CI can explain it better, but from what I understand, CI's provide you with a totally different way of hearing.

Welcome Lisa! Glad you found us here.

I am a bit puzzled as to why you had the surgery 18 months ago but haven't worn it until now. So you've been without sound for 18 months?

Yes, if you have been without sounds for a while it does take a while for things to sound like your hearing aid and better. Usually when they first turn the CI on, they give you a very basic program and every time you go back for a reprogram it will start to sound better and better. This is because it takes time to get the brain use to sounds again, especially when it has been use to peace and quiet! So these things take time.

I remember when I first had my CI turned on it didn't sound very good. A lot of static in the background and there were some sounds I could not hear at all, such as cars on the street. I didn't realise that back then my brain could only tolerate a very quiet program, because I didn't have decent sound for 9 months. The static eventually disappeared and things just sounded better and better. I probably got to hearing aid quality in 3 months and then after 6 months it sounded way better than my hearing aids.

I would ask your audiologist to get you extra help with auditory verbal therapy, if you can.

Welcome to the boards. I had my left ear implanted in April and I was activated in May.

Things can sound very different with the implant so you may need to relearn some sounds. I had to relearn the sound of motors as they sound very different from when I wore my hearing aid. I could only hear low frequencies from motors with my hearing aid. Now I can hear the higher frequencies from motors with my CI.

When I first got hooked up, sounds came out very beepy. Music sounded very staticy to me and that depressed me. Now I almost never go anywhere in my car without turning the radio and listening to music. I haven't been able to listen to music without an awful ringing in my ear for 20 years.

As for audiobooks, it's best to start out with children's audiobooks. When I first started using them,Good night, Moon was the only audiobook that I could follow. I couldn't follow Cat In The Hat at all. I listened to Cat In The Hat again the other day and this time around it's much easier to follow.

CI do not work like hearing aids. Hearing aids merely amp up the sound. If the majority of your cilas in the cochlear are damaged, the sound will be rather distorted.

CIs bypasses the cilas in your cochlear and as a result the sound is much less distorted and it's easier to make sense of sounds that you hear. Thus it's much easier to use the phone than with hearing aids.

Speaking of phones, I just called my parents via the phone for the first time ever in my life yesterday. As my CI didn't come with a built in T-coil, I had to order a T-coil wire and clip one end of my wire over the top end of my phone. I've been turned on for only 3 months. Your mileage may vary.

You'd need mappings so the CI can work well for you. You can't just stick on the CI and expect it to work for you.

I wish you well with your CI.

Yes, the first few weeks can be tough for some people. Do you like your audiologist and feel that you can tell her exactly how you feel? You need to be telling him/her that you are really struggling and need a different approach. If not, it might be worth changing him/her to get someone your are comfortable with. Hang in there and stick with us.

good luck with your surgery

god will be with you and your surgery will be ok after it all over

There is a few other places online that you can practice with words. Here is a few.

Randalls's ESL Cyber Listening Lab

Listening Room

Overdrive

I hope this helps you. From what I hear the hard part is the rehabilitation associated with the CI. I hope you really work at it with your audiologist to get your CI to the point of where you can understand different sounds.

Thank You
