Today I was in the mall and a police officer tried to talk to me. I couldn't see him so I continued to walk. He tapped on my shoulder and started talking really fast so I couldn't use what lip-reading skills I do have to make out what he was saying. I stopped him and told him I was deaf. He smiled and started signing really fast. The whole time I was like  WHA???? I had no idea what the guy was saying, or signing for that matter. I'm a terrible signer and an even worse lip-reader. It's frustrating to have 3 forms of communication that I could use, but not being able to properly use any of them.

sorry its frustrating but curious about how do you communicate normally with anyone?

Pen and paper is your best friend....Kudos to the police officer for knowing ASL tho'....Dunno how old you are, but learning ASL would be great for you, too...an adjustment, I'm sure of. And lip-reading classes too, if you prefer...otherwise, you're gonna be very isolated. No need for that! So make good of what you can do for yourself in a positive way. Good Luck!

Well
At east the pig didn't beat you and or taser you or worse
You came out ok girl

Was that really necessary to be this insulting to a police officer, particularly one that was making an effort? He wears a badge so he's automatically a "pig" to you....

I'm going on a whim and guessing there are more officers who can use finger spelling. That was useful in a noisy club after he broke up a little cat & nail dance. :D

This seems to demonstrate what a lack of emphasis on firm lingusitic base and isolation in the mainstream can do to d/Deaf people, it disables them!!, not good...

well the cop might have been a CODA (children of Deaf adult) which might be why he was a fluent signer!...pretty sad...but yea you could have asked with a 'halt' hand sign and request to communicate via pen and paper....(or texts on the mobile phone (but not sent it, just showing to each other as you're standing there with them)...

that sort of thing,
not easy ...
also I think its high time to really LEARN ASL, go and make more effort there and mix with Deaf people....it would/will be a rocky road but its better than a long smooth road of nothingness.....

He's libertarian.

I'm a good lipreader but can't sign so it gets awkward if I get pulled over for speeding and the cop tries to talk to me over his loudspeaker. I usually just make a motion pointing to my ears or even just get out of the car.

You're in atlanta right? I'm in the north metro area, small world! There are many deaf resources in the area such as deaf school, meetups, etc.... If you do a google you'll find many of them! Good luck!

Did you use pen and paper with the cop?

If you had a tumor in the temporal lobe, you should be thrilled you can still retain language skills and communicate at all.

Why did the cop want to stop you anyway??

This is something that has never happened to me in a mall.

Lol a cop stopped me he flagged me down In police car he thought I was 15 I told him I am 22 that was long time ago he gulped then left never bothered me again geez guys always try to hit on me for obvious reasons but I ignored them lol ;) yes paper and pen is the best thing in case a moron want to communicate lol :)
