NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey (AP) -- What do you call a sandwich made of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries?

Around here, it's called a Fat Darrell -- and you also can call it a winning combo.

The "Fat Darrell" has been crowned the best sandwich in the country by Maxim magazine.

The concoction was created early one morning in 1997 by Darrell Butler after a night of partying.

Butler, a Rutgers University sophomore, conceived of the sandwich as a way to save money by combining his various cravings on one bun.

"Separately, they would have cost me, like, $12.75, and I was on a college budget," Butler, 26, of Eatontown.

The Fat Darrell is named for its caloric content, not Butler, a 160-pound physical trainer and aspiring actor.

"So, I'm standing there eating it, and all of a sudden the guy standing behind me says, 'That thing that guy's eating looks pretty good, can you make me one of those?' And, it was like a movie scene, the next 10 people order the same thing. So, I'm like, 'Whoa!' like I think I might be onto something."

The man who assembled the sandwich was Abdul Eid, working in an R.U. Hungry food truck, parked in a campus lot in New Brunswick, catering to beer-soaked undergraduates with the late-night munchies.

Eid now runs R.U. Hungry Grill & Pizza, a store on Easton Avenue he was able to open in part due to the success of the $4.75 Fat Darrell.

Maxim's September issue, which lists the top 10 sandwiches, hits newsstands Tuesday.

Hmm... this sounds delicious!

I wonder what the exact address for this restaurant is?

chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries?
UGH!!! Sounds fattening! Although I do love mozzarella sticks! I like some french fries but not the blah soggy type with the crinkles.

eww... it sure sounds gross but I guess it won't hurt to give it a try.....

Vampy.....
The way I read it, it sounds like the business is being conducted out of one of those hot/cold foods trucks that drive around to businesses for lunch, etc except this guy parks near beer-guzzled college students who need late night eats.....lol

ohh sounds good!!!! and my stomach is growling -- thanks e! hahaha

how did it taste for u e if u have already tried it qq DO TELL!!!!!!!!!

You mean the ones that usually seen downtown , look like a cart that served foods out on the sidewalk?...*confused*

Hmm...sounds fattening. ;) Another thing, I just don't think I'd be able to finish it at all. Not even half finished. I've been challenged to do the huge burger at Captain America's -- but have always declined because I knew I'd not finish it at all.
The normal sized burger I had there - I didn't finish it. :P

Ooh that sounds delicious! I think I'll check it out sometimes next week. :)

Angel, hi...
I am on the West Coast so am not sure how popular this is back East but the vehicle is like a heavy duty pick-up truck and outfitted with propane, heating elements, etc and they drive from business to business for mid-morning snacks like coffee, bagels, donuts, etc and then again for lunch. They have everything! Truck sides open up to reveal the goodies in the interior. Cold drinks, ice, tea, water, hot & cold sandwiches, sweets, etc, etc. I know there's a name for these sevice trucks and for the second day in a row, the term escapes me! Dang! LOL! But did the above enlighten you? If not, I shall go and sit in the corner! Boo Hoo!

To "Brain Fart or Pre-Alzheimer's" usi

Hi Tousi ,

Thank you for explaining what you meant above, I haven't seen anything like that where I live but maybe around where business are at, the only truck I've seen that has food in it, is an icecream truck! heh.....

One nickname for those trucks is "Roach Coach"
Yes you are right...we have 2 or 3 of them at where i work....Army Ammunition plant...they serve just about everything..sandwiches, egg/sausage biscuits, salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, candy, all kinds of drinks not beer lol, etc...I rarely buy off them cuz they are not really good and too damn expensive so we are better off bringing our own lunch....
