DO you think that the ILY symbol is kind of tacky and too overused and generalized in the hearing world also.......
what do you think about the ILY symbol in the Deaf world.
 
No, I don't think it's a tacky sign. I'd think the bird is more generalized than _\m/ ... ;)

Why do you feel this way?
 
I am tired of seeing - when I walk into a deaf store - the ILY symbol every where - on mugs, shirts, purses, bags, even pencils and statues.......on clocks, posters, etc.........
 
ILY symbol is part of LOVE. even important to Deaf community, also. notice Deafies use ILY symbol or sign to me more than outside of Deaf community. guess that my world is so small. I love them as sisters and brothers.

never say ily sign in gang area bec ily sign symbol for latin kings, my bro is part of it and he warned me never say that in the gang area. he does understand ily is deaf sign, but gangsters refuse to understand.
 
I met someone one time! and the person told me I love you....I was like uh does the person ( by the way a guy) saying he LOVES me or by bye i love you cuz he did ask if i had a boyfriend and was talking ot me for long time.....
 
I guess it's commerical, then, babyphat? Is it possible for you to get in touch with those shippers and businesses that make ily signs on stuff, and tell them you're sick of it? Or even the store owner?

I know exactly what you are talking about. It's like the _\,,/ sign is overly used and commercialized that it lost most of its meaning. *sigh* Those damn media people!

I think it's possible to say I love you because of friendship, as well. If you don't "click" with him, you don't have to return the ILY sign and you can ask him what he meant by throwing a "ILY" at you. ;)

I did not grow up in a family that would say ILY, so the ILY sign got a while for me to get used to. I am not used to hug another or be hugged either. :)

The little kid in me loves a good mutual friendly and loving ILY... not if it's used cheaply or for meaningless reasons. :crazy:

I'm sick of the family oriented ILYs on commerical stuff. Often I see Mickey Mouse-like glove covered ILYs... if you know what I mean.
 
I didnt say he signed it - i said he told me it - on tty......I was like what the FUCK!!!!
 
We wanted to promote our language... now it gets over-rated? I'm wee bit confused here as I believe ILY is better than the ..I., sign
 
I agree that it is overused and overcommercialised, but you have got to admit that the ILY symbol is the most well known sign for the hearies to know. It's like going to Germany and imagining cliches like bratwürste, pretzels, beers, lederhosen, biergartens, etc... Everyone who I meet in America, who knows that I know German, always says "Auf Wiedersehen" to me. I am like "ehhhhhhh" but I know it is a famous expression for Germans. It is a symbol, period. You can't really deny it. If you are sick of all those ILY merchandises, you can exercise your role as a consumer NOT to purchase these products. But, it is good to have it out there for anyone who wants them.
 
It's pretty much too late to copyright that sign.... if it gets commericalised by hearies too much - then I believe the USA needs to start protecting it from such exploitation so it only goes to benefit Deafies on the International scale...
