Vrsterp,
I hardly use VRS relay; however, I'm glad that you are able to share this important issue with deaf people who use VRS. I've used terps all my life and I don't treat them like they are here to be my mother. Many times I do appericate their hard working. One of those things that bothers me the most is when deaf people do not know how to use terps professionally. I don't think they really do understand the concept of set up a boundary between interp and themselves. A professional terp is a lot different than when a deaf person use one of their family members to interpt. A prof terp is not here to give advices or opinions like the family members do.
I can not stand when my sisters or parents are interpreting for me because they often share their opinions and make a claim that those opinions coming from me. I would say yes, but my sister would say no just because she disagrees with the question that was asked.
A long time ago, terps did embarass me in the class because I had a bad habit of talking to myself. Especially when I got tests in, I would talk things to myself. Some interpreter made a mistake to voice what I said. I did not like that because I was not talking to the teacher. Sometimes I do talk to the interpreter about what grade I got on the test. One times a newbie interpreter voiced " I got an 95% on the test." Actually I was talking to her, but other students and teacher looked at me. Many times I had to warn interpreters what things I want them to voice and not. In fact it does annoy me just like you are frustrated with some deaf people.
