If you use VRS or are a VRS interpreter, please read this!

Vrsterp,

I hardly use VRS relay; however, I'm glad that you are able to share this important issue with deaf people who use VRS. I've used terps all my life and I don't treat them like they are here to be my mother. Many times I do appericate their hard working. One of those things that bothers me the most is when deaf people do not know how to use terps professionally. I don't think they really do understand the concept of set up a boundary between interp and themselves. A professional terp is a lot different than when a deaf person use one of their family members to interpt. A prof terp is not here to give advices or opinions like the family members do.

I can not stand when my sisters or parents are interpreting for me because they often share their opinions and make a claim that those opinions coming from me. I would say yes, but my sister would say no just because she disagrees with the question that was asked.

A long time ago, terps did embarass me in the class because I had a bad habit of talking to myself. Especially when I got tests in, I would talk things to myself. Some interpreter made a mistake to voice what I said. I did not like that because I was not talking to the teacher. Sometimes I do talk to the interpreter about what grade I got on the test. One times a newbie interpreter voiced " I got an 95% on the test." Actually I was talking to her, but other students and teacher looked at me. Many times I had to warn interpreters what things I want them to voice and not. In fact it does annoy me just like you are frustrated with some deaf people.

I don't think you can sue for a simple hang up on relay. Businesses hang up on lots of people. They can also choose not to do business with everyone who calls them over the telephone.

it worked, when I called school district many times when they kept hunging up on me I printed out on my TTY and showed City Hall, I got apologized, small thing, so far since they are responding/listening TTY relay explaining, finally!

Also City Hall did published on this local newspaper about TTY nad VRS.

I feel bad in those situations because I do want to be friendly. If they want to chat a little bit, I don't mind. But it's hard to know when they want me to voice for them or not. It's too confusing. With VRS, of course you're not supposed to chat because it is VERY confusing because the hearing can't see the deaf person and the deaf can't see the hearing person, so you never know who is really talking to you.

It's extra hard when the deaf person says something like "stupid asshole hearing person" because if I voice it, the deaf person might get mad and say "I didnt want u to say it!" But if the hearing person said "Stupid asshole deaf person" I would sign it. So it's not right for me to pick and choose what to interpret and what not to interpret. You know?

If the deaf person told me & the hearing person to hold, and the hearing person chats with me and says something like "God i hate these relay calls. Those deaf people are always wasting my time" I would be PISSED they had the nerve to say that. And although I DO subconsciously lean towards the deaf person's side, it's not appropriate to let the deaf person say things like that about the hearing person because I wouldn't let the hearing person say it about the deaf person.

It's easy to get pissed at someone for not understanding relay. I'm guilty of that, too. But you just have to think "They have NO idea what this is. They have no experience with relay, and they probably have never met a deaf person face to face in their entire lives." and try to hide your annoyance and explain it to them.

I'm glad you got an apology. It's not quite enough but at least you know next time another deaf person calls that place, maybe they'll understand they have to take the call.

more than once call in every few sec and relay did tried not explaining, same hung up not interested in deaf what they said before hung up that is rude
and there's about 200 deaf of 60,000, mostly older, have to walk in clinics to make an appt, e.t.c. when they asked me a favor for a ride there I just asked them same here they got tired of getting hung up! Sheesh, Spanish provided not ASL interpreters, where I am studying at college no interpreter available in the mornings , TTY never heard of but the yellow book there's WA state relay nbr :)

You call back 2 more times if they hang up both times then it's time to sue. It's simple as 3 strikes, youre out!

Next time use a lawyer who'll decide how much apology you deserve from City Hall.

I really don't think it works that way, Richard. What monetary damages happened as a result of not answering a relay call? What discrimination happened, other than not taking a call that sounds like a telemarketing call? Does a business have to take every call, even if it's a harrassing or obscene call? Businesses are allowed to not accept certain calls.

It is discrimination when you call about something and then when you somehow mention you're deaf on a call, then they hang up on you. A relay service does not go out of their way to say you're deaf or hard of hearing.

If you can point out to me a successful case of someone suing a business based on them not receiving a relay call, then I'll be happy to spread the word. I can imagine a 911 provider being sued, but not a business that, say, sells cameras or mail order items.

Usually on the 2nd or 3rd time you'll see them say the magic words before they hang up that will raise the red flag. That's why you call at least 3 times.

Richard

That lawsuit was settled. No guilt was determined in the suit. They didn't want to fight it out in court, so they paid her off. I don't think it'll go as easily the next time.

most of the time its the small business that does the hang up on me, I think its just simply a misunderstanding myself as I have found different results with different relay operators myself

for the VRS, I simply LOVE it as its just a great tool to be myself and being able to save myself ALOT of time doing business calls

and yes my friends will need to read the tips before using relay as I've been polite to all of operators myself.

I think they need to know who they call. When there more then 1 person in house, they ask for the person who you wish to speak.

Sheesh Richard I bet if someone gave you a free car you would complain the color is not what you wanted and the seats are not what you wanted and the tires are not what you wanted and the engine is not what you wanted .....

You never seem to be happy about anything from what I have seen of your posts.

If you dont want them to hang up on you then ask the FCC to run some PSA's.

Hearing people dont run around wanting to sue people for hanging up on them. Please say you are not serious about wanting to sue someone for hanging up on you.Thats just nuts.
