"If the babies cannot hear, they cannot develop language," says Dr. Sudeep Kukreja, Medical Director of the Newborn Hearign Screening Program at CHOC ( Childrens Hospital of Orange County )

I stand neutral on this.

CHOC is a 501(c)(3) hospital and statement looks like propaganda which isnt allowed for 501(c)(3) entities.

So whats the rebuttal if any has the guts?

Richard

Maybe this is better placed in the sign language and oralism section of the board?

I feel that Sign is a perfectly valid language. Just because its syntax isn't the same as English doesn't mean it isn't a language in its own right.

That statement is a load of :bsflag:

American Sign Language is a language.

So is written English, and there are lots of people who can work with written English who have never heard it nor know how to pronounce it, yet they still know English.

Just b/c something isn't nonprofit it, doesn't mean that it's unbiased. Medience is a HUGE HUGE moneymaker.................the oralists push oral only b/c then that way, dhh kids will be dependant on speech only and not be able to function without hearing aids or CIs.

It's a choice of whether to go CI or not. If some parents want to use the best tech for their child, why shouldn't they?
Medicine isn't HUGE, profit-wise. So many people are suing that some reseachers are afraid to advance. Don't get me started on the back-ass-ward FDA...

Sign or Oral? Hell, why not try BOTH!

Like so many deaf/hoh people living now. There are plenty of deaf people succesful using oral methods. People that have little connection to Deaf world and are doing great.

By the way... how much money is made because people can only use sign.?? Translators, telephone services..
Money will allways be made.... whichever way you choose.

THis is just purely hogwash! I was born deaf, and I don't learn to speak, and if this statement that it claimed to be true, I wouldn't be able to post like this! Howcome I could?

Im smelling baloney here!

:gpost: Cloggy

Either oral communication ( HAs,CIs) or signing (teaching sign language ,specialized deaf tools etc ) , each choice costs some money .

Money is always among us !

Dr. Sudeep Kukreja is cussword! His or her statement remarks very rude. We have eyes and hands that can be develop in early sign langauges.

Is Sudeep Kukreja weird name a male or female?

I believe it is Indian. I'm not sure what language it would be.

Maybe the "good" doctor is influenced by her/his home country's additude towards deafness.
What's the general trend in India, anyway?

Oh my gosh...Dr. Sudeep Kukreja is an ignorant bastard who shouldnt be a doctor!!! I would love to send him an email to do some more accurate research before making such a statement like that! Such bias!!!

Do you have a direct link the the article? I can't find it on that web site and don't really want to spend the time to figure out where to find the june issue since it's not in the archives that come up that I can see......thanks. I'd just like to see if there is more there then the quote given.

Don't know about the gender but I think this person is Indian (not American Indian) in heritage.
Wouldn't be surprised if this person looks down on and discounts sign language?
