Here's another global warming alarmist to be rescued from the icy Arctic.

TOM Smitheringale wanted to prove the world was warming. Now he’s another alarmist with frostbite.

The 40-year-old from Perth planned to be the first Australian to trek unassisted to the North Pole, but announced he’d raise some consciousness along the way.

As he wrote on his website: “Part of the reason Tom’s One Man Epic is taking place now is because of the effect that global warming is having on the polar ice caps.”

Indeed, he wanted to see the North Pole while it was still there: “Some scientists have even estimated that the polar ice cap will have entirely melted away by 2014!”

But Antarctica isn’t melting away, and Arctic ice has slowly increased since its big low in 1997.

But no one seems to have told Tom, who soon found his extremities freezing.

Two weeks ago he nearly called off his trek after suffering excruciating pain in his fingers and thumbs, forcing him to call in emergency help.

And last week he had to be rescued by Canadian soldiers after falling through the ice sheet.

“(I) came very close to the grave,” he said, on being flown out.

This is actually now the fourth year running that warming alarmists have had to be rescued from expeditions to prove the Arctic is warmer than it actually is. It’s a metaphor.

Tom need to realize that he was fooled by the mainstream media (and Al Gore) saying the Arctic sea ice is melting away. Hardly. I guess he earned his stupidity the hard way.

God, some people are such idiots. That was...painful to read.

You'd think people would actually learn something. "Getting warmer" by environmental standards, not by human standards. That's like saying your room-temperature kitchen counter is cold just cause it feels cold to the touch.

:ugh3:

Um, falling through the ice sheet pretty much proves the point that global warming is a problem in the arctic. That stuff is supposed to be solid all year round. Kinda sucks that he almost died though...

Er, at this point in time (this day) the sea ice extent is larger than what it was in 2003. So was exactly one year ago (2009) and that today we're slightly ahead of the sea ice extent. So, how does falling through the ice sheet proves anything about global warming in the arctic??

The guy was an idiot in the first place.

You don't know much about Arctic life, eh?

What a dumbass.

And that's all to it.

To compare, my cousin remember when everyone did freestyle while rockclimbing, until idiots thought the sport was safe and started falling. Now people are expected to wear harnesses.

Pure stupidity.

It's only solid year round near the pole, well inside the Arctic Circle.

Global warming is just still questionable and I don't know why was ice shrinking for several years before rebound in certain years. I'm not backing Al Gore or conservative about global warming because global warming is very complicated to understand so more research is needed.

My views on global warming is unknown but questionable.

It may be questionable to the lay person but it's not questionable to the majority of the scientific community despite kokonut's dubious claims and his questionable credentials. He doesn't seem to know the difference between politicans and scientists if his rants about Gore is any example.

Yes, it's quite complicated and I don't pretend to understand everything on this subject.

"...not questionable to the majority of the scientific community..."? Exactly what are you referring to as "not questionable" and exactly where do you have a reference saying that the "majority of the scientific community" do find it "not questionable?"

Are you at all familiar with the NSIDC and JAXA sea ice plots?

Explain to me exactly how the Arctic sea ice is melting away (a la Al Gore's version) if in 2007 at it's lowest ever recorded sea ice extent (note that sea ice data go back to 1979 when it first started) it was 93% (as of yesterday) of the normal areal size (based on 1979 - 2000 average) versus today of almost 99% of the normal areal size on this day? Explain to me how summer ice will melt completely away in less than 3 years from now based on what Al Gore said 2 years (in 2007) ago that summer sea ice will be gone in 5 years? It seems like Al Gore doesn't know his science and that politics is his goal. He sure seems to make a lot of money off of this, though.

And why do you persist in making these personal quasi-attacks on me? You have an ax to grind or what? I find it rather curious though.

but sea level is still rises and some of lakes are shrinking.

Yeah, deafskeptic, what's up with the personal attacks, especially when you say ".........I don't pretend to know anything.......?"
