Let's say that I have decided to not have people come to my house to buy bikes anymore. I decide to meet people at Starbucks or Walgreen to complete every transactions.

However, what if I was to have someone come and paint my house or fix gutter on roof? I would still have people come to my house in that regard.

I guess that what I am saying is that your risk of being killed by a painter or handyman is the same as doing Craigslist deals.

What are your thoughts?

Rent a place to sell bikes like many people do.

That doesn't change what he's saying. The place where he lives will sometimes need work that he needs to hire someone to do. That will happen independently of where he sells bikes.

So there will always be someone coming to the house at some point.

I personally use craigslist for a variety of things because I like using it and I'm not willing to stop living to that degree in order to avoid risk.

But to address what you're saying, I think that with painters or roofers etc., you can choose someone who advertises with their name and the name of their business, maybe a phone number and address: plenty of information that can be used to identify them. (You can even ask your friends for referrals if they've had similar work done.) Then if something happens, they are responsible. Even if it is one of their workers who hurts you, the owner is responsible, so there is alot of motivation to behave: they don't want to ruin their reputation.

Customers on Craigslist don't have reputations. They might prefer to stay anonymous, maybe use a fake name. Those people might still be good customers. They might like their privacy, or they might be trying to protect themselves from you (or any potential risk they think you might represent). For whatever reason, they are less known, and so a greater risk to you because if they wanted to do something bad, they have less to lose.

I think the risk is less as not only does it occur much less frequently but usually those tradespeople are bonded......so the chances are.....

I think it's a bad idea to do business at home because once customers know where you and/or your family live, one or some of them will break in to rob and possibly kill your family.

As for hiring a person to do the work around your house, find one from Yellow Pages, not Craigslist. :nono:

I think the chances of them breaking in depends on whether or not you have lots of expensive things out where they can see them. For rich people who can afford lots of expensive things, they can also probably afford to have a separate location for their business. For people who can't, if they don't have much money, they probably don't have alot of high end stuff to steal either.

I don't think anyone said anything about hiring workpeople to come to your house off craigslist. It was just the idea that *someone* comes to the house.

If a customer saw that he has a lot of bikes for sale in the garage, then bye bye, his bikes will be gone eventually.

Someone like Sears repairman?

Yes, someone like Sears repairman or maybe even independent labor worker.

Oh, maybe you are right. I read his posts here and got the impression that he mainly sells very inexpensive bikes. I remember seeing prices like $30.00. But maybe he shows expensive bikes too.

Burglars don't care since they need money whether it's $50 or $500. They can take them, move on and burglarize other houses to take more stuffs.

Much more efficient to steal something that is

(1) more expensive and
(2) easy to sell.

If they steal a bike that Derrek was trying to sell for $30.00, they don't have $30.00. They have a bike that *maybe* they can sell for $30.00. But they have to find a customer first, and meet with that customer etc. Severe pia if you're not into it. Where will they meet the customer? Where will they store the bike until they can sell it? How long will it take to sell it? Can they find someone who is interested in this bike? Seriously, not easy money, even if you steal the bike.

And it depends on what else is out there. If you have a bunch of inexpensive bikes and most people in your area have *nothing*, then you're probably at higher risk for theft, all other things equal. But if you have some neighbors with lots of little new tech-y things (expensive and very easy to steal, sell (maybe online), ship, etc.,) then the thief gets alot more for his time by passing you over.

Cash, electronics, gold (jewelry), drugs, credit cards and guns.

life is a risk but if you have recommened qualified workman come to house satistics say unlikely be serial killer

I buy things off Craigs list but I do perfer to meet public than at sellers house for safety reasons but for you to consistently be seling bikes out of your home its good and bad. Bad... disgruntled buyers know where u live bad... can steal your merchandise if know your layout of house and your dogs not home guarding good... customers can buy more bike or switch to d8fferent bike they leave happier.. good... youre not wasting your time for no shows if youre already home doing other stuff

I am not sure you be allowed to sell bikes on stores parking lots . I would you would need a permit . I wonder if could you sell bikes out of a storage bin?

I do not plan to set up a lot. What I was thinking of doing is taking pictures of a bike and advertise it online.

Once I get a buyer, I can ride or meet buyer to give demo and sell it.

i had the JW come to house once they came back with signer to my dismay and many wasted hours

Next time they show up, open the door while you are naked. It will work effectively that they will never come back ever again. :giggle:
