I Will Be Getting My Sign Name in a Few Days!

Sign students picking their own name signs can be also risky. They can end up with some really obscene or embarrassing "names" because they don't know all the name sign rules.

Yea, look like it's better to learn the ASL first or having a given sign name by a deaf person. :)

It has always been a strong rule here that only Deafie can really give a hearing person their sign name as it is an important part of the culture since it is the Deafie who mostly do the observation of the behaviour of that person to give them the appropriate sign name that fit them well.

Not always it can be fitting as sometimes the situation can change and the sign name can change as I know of a deaf friend of mine who been thru 4 different name sign before accepting the one that most suit them.
Just a point to let u know. :)

My name sign changed last year. For years I used the one that I was given by a teacher long, long ago...but then my friends at Gallaudet gave me a new one. I don't remember why, but they gave me a new one, and I liked it! Now everybody uses it. :D

Okay! Drum roll please! My name sign is...the same sign for computer. Since I am into computers (not really, not like in the past) my deaf teacher gave me that sign name. The right C-hand moving back-and-forth atop my left arm.

That's it, simple.

One of my USA friends has the same sign name, argh - so confusing

That's pretty cool simple sign name, AquaBlue. Now ya got your sign name. :) Congrats.

It's okay...I'm not wildly excited about that specific name sign given me. But what can I say or do about it?

Aqua U dont have to really accept that sign name if u feels it not quite right and they will think of another sign name that both can agree on. Not always does one really have to accept the first sign name given if they are not comfortable with. It about compromise that both party are happy with it. Hope this helps.:)

OK then...I don't want it. It does not say anything about me. It only says what I do (or this case what I use to do- computer design) as far as work. It's not a sign name that tells another who I truly am. I am not going to use it. In the future another deaf person(s) will give me a more fitting sign name. I'll just have to wait until then. Thanks Sasha64!

Oh Cool! :) Congrats :D

Or you could just ask your teacher for another one, you don't have to wait for someone else to give it to you.

That'strue but the class ended yesterday. I might not see him ever again. Ooh well.

Maybe someone here can give you one? I see you have been here since '03. I am not sure but maybe?

AquaBlue may have registered in 2003, but he started to be active late last year, is that correct, Carlos?

I believe the deafies are only to give the sign names to their hearing friends. I think it's part of the deaf culture. :dunno:

BTW, congratulations.....
I've never heard of that rule.

I've seen some deafies get sign names from hearing people and some hearing people get sign names from other hearing people.

I think the concept of "earning" a sign name is bogus and not something one should be excited about when given by one other individual.

Everyone has different ideas for sign names. I've had over 10 different sign names given to me and I've rejected all of them. The reason for rejecting all of them was because many other people didn't understand the reason behind the sign name given to me.

The sign name I have right now is the same sign name I've had since I was 5 years old... given to me by my kindergarten teacher. ;)

Because, from my understanding, only a deaf person can issue a sign name. Am I right on that folks?
I've never heard of that. Where did you hear that from?

I don't see it as a rule or anything. :dunno:

Also, Doesn't one's name sign remain with that person forever??
I doubt it. Everyone changes.

I knew a girl who had a sign name related to her dimple. Her dimple faded away and her sign name changed.

I also knew another girl who had a sign name related to her curly hair. Her hair straightened out as she got older. So, her sign name changed.

Someone game me a name sign based on me being :D but I'm not like that all the time. :squint: Besides that one, I've had just 2 generic ones, one my family used and one I used at school.

When my mom told me about the thing about deaf people being the ones giving others name signs, I thought it was interesting that it implied that you couldn't just give yourself one.

The early posts made it seem like it was going to be something magical and it sure deflated that feeling once we knew the sign the original poster got. :)
