That's right! My deaf teacher will give every student a sign name. I will get mine next Monday night (6/23/08). An important moment indeed.

:h5: :thumb: :hyper:

Just make sure its not 'Papa Smurf'

i think it is special moment and special feeling that someone think of ur name and give u a sign name i think it is very nice of them ^_^

it make u feel special and important when someone give u a sign name

I believe the deafies are only to give the sign names to their hearing friends. I think it's part of the deaf culture. :dunno:

BTW, congratulations.....

Because, from my understanding, only a deaf person can issue a sign name. Am I right on that folks?

Well my personally opinion, it's unnecessary, I've seen some hearing students created their own name sign after they learned the ASL, but if you prefer the deaf people to give you a name sign, that's allright :)

Congrats :D

Also, Doesn't one's name sign remain with that person forever??

Yes till that person decide to change. I did change my name sign because my old name sign sounds too kiddy so I change it to something more mature.

Oh, I respect that, man. I just thought it was the part of the deaf culture, that's all. heh

Sign students picking their own name signs can be also risky. They can end up with some really obscene or embarrassing "names" because they don't know all the name sign rules.

Not always. Sometimes adults change their childhood names, or married women modify their maiden name signs. Also, there are cases of one deaf person moving to a new area where a more established member of the deaf community is using the same name sign. The "junior" newbie might want to change to a different name sign to reduce confusion.

My mom who learned about Deaf culture as an interpreter taught me that it were Deaf people who gave name signs. So one of her deaf friends gave me one.

True. But regardless, it will be an important moment for me. :P

:wiggle:
Let us know when you get it! I never knew about the name giving so this is new for me and I am interested to see how it goes for you.
