Today my mother got a call from the blood bank hoping to get me to donate platelets. Apparently I'm one of small percentage of group that can do this.
I'll give them a call and make a booking. They always make sure an interpreter is available for my appointment.
I have only donated one time this year. Feel bad but cannot be helped as my iron level and vitamin b12 level was very low this year.
Anyway, have anyone donated platelets before?
I went and tried donating blood today. It was a complete mess. Usually, they struggle to find a good pumper in my arm. They found one. I think they either stuck the needle in wrong, or pierced the vein all the way through. All of a sudden my arm starting burning like it was on fire. A huge hematoma has developed. They had to take the needle out. Now I have a huge painful hematoma on my arm. They told me to keep ice on and off of it tonight. And that it will be sore for a few days. The poor lady kept apologizing. I told her it is OK, and I will try again Next month.
I always end up with bruises when I donate. but Never had anything like this happen.
Any of you want to share you experiences? Can be about donating blood or about having your blood drawn.

I had the same thing happen years ago. I laid on the cot for two hours trying to give one pint. The bag never did fill up, so they threw it out. My arm burned the whole time, and by next day my whole upper arm was black and blue and swollen.I went and tried donating blood today. It was a complete mess. this thread is worse than a horror film...i skipped pages..as the first page just chills me with this 'broken needle inside my vein' yuck...
whimp
if i came back in time, and see you there harrassed like that, I'd jab her some big fat needles in the back and wiggle it in deep flick on the pumper and run off back into the time machine, and you'd say I dont know who the F#*k did this, never seen him before , it looks like that guy who eats sandwiches on the computer (people will think they'd drained too much blood from you to go hallucinating)... LOLI've only given blood once, in high school, I had just made the weight cut. At first it was going okay at first then my blood stopped going into the bag. So the nurse comes over and starts wiggling the needle back and forth and pushing down on it with her thumb. I remember thinking *bitch that needle is IN my arm* I remember having a huge bruise but I don't remember if I filled the bag. Probably, because it would have been memorable if they stopped in the middle, so it must have started pumping again.
A few years later I went with my sister, her husband and one if their friends to the Boston Children's Hospital to donate blood for my niece. She was going to have heart surgery and we're the same type. They wouldn't take my blood though, my blood pressure was too low. The nurse was very snotty about it too, she asked me in a nasty tone "did you even eat today?" Gah!! I had McDonald's in the car on the way there, a Big Mac fries and soda!! It's just always low, even when I was pregnant it was low.
So I've never tried again.
