I left the garbage disposal on for 45 minutes

I have left the garbage disposal on, the water running, left my car unlocked because I cant hear the double beeps letting me know that the alarm wont turn on due to unlocked doors, and so many more. We all need to get together and brainstorm for some kind of alert device on all of those things for deaf or hoh people and get rich! ha!

Seriously, I think, with the technology we have now, different kinds of alerting systems can be created for anything nowadays.

Don't put your other hand in the water at the same time.

I wonder if any deaf people ever got injured by a running garbage disposal? Anyone know? I have never met one person with any hand or finger damage from a running garbage disposal.

I have known so many deaf people and myself included who have flooded our homes by leaving the water on. That seems to be a common issue in the Deaf community.

I have a close friend whose bathroom sink was stopped up, and he left the faucet running all night until his daughter came to visit the next day. He hadn't gotten up yet so didn't realize the water had been running all night, and it had run down all the walls to the basement. He had to have his entire basement re-done as a result. He had insurance, so it only cost him his deductible to have it all repaired, but still !!!!!

My friend left her upstairs bathroom faucet running all night and water was pouring into her kitchen. The ceiling also opened up as well.
 
I have never heard of anyone getting hurt or having a finger chopped off by a disposal at all deaf or not ... only seen something like that in a movie or something ... my ex had one and thats the only time I've ever used one but never left it on even if I didn't have my CI on I still felt the vibrations through the sink/cabinet ...

EDIT: I've been in the fire service 20+ years and never heard a call of someone getting into a disposal ... someone got a thumb caught in a seatbelt latch yes but never anything with one of those.

It is a new garbage disposal and it is really quiet. Our old one vibrated and shook the sink. I normally always turn the garbage disposal off then the water like you said. Somehow this morning I just didn't do it. I have to admit I was still sleepy and distracted by my little doggie.
Also if I have the dishwasher open, loading dishes, it's a pretty good reach to the switch.
 
Sadly we have no garbage disposal so we have to use plastic drain catch guards to prevent crap going into the sink and clog up.
 
OMG! I just got a whiff of my special Epson salt with its special smell and I thought, "Holt S****, I left the bathtub water running and forgot about it!!!". I ran to the bathroom...nothing.


This thread got me trippin" into thinking I am leaving the water on. Weird!

Great post Shel. This is exactly how I feel. Glad to know others have done the same. By the way, the garbage disposal still works and hubby is happy so things are good.

I don't mean to get off-topic in this thread at all, but I don't have one either and I love not having one. I was forever clogging up the one we did have at my first home. My 2nd and 3rd homes didn't have one (I built my current home so I specifically requested NOT having one). I find it much easier to scrape stuff into the garbage and then just rinse off the little tiny tidbits in the sink before they go in the dishwasher.

You may want to check in the dishwasher manual first ... but the newer ones have a built in grinder thing kinda like a garbage disposal that will grind little bits of food and stuff up before the water carries it out the drain ... have 2 dishwasher here at the house ... 1 is built in and 1 is portable you hook up the the faucet on wheels ... that one had the grinder thing ... the built in 1 is older and dont ...

Some of them have filters to prevent debris from going into the pipeline. You remove it and clean it out then put it back in.
 
Close, but this is not the right one. This one you show, the light will come on when it is in "Off" position so you can find the switch when in dark, that is not right one for garbage disposal. There are lighted toggle switch available, and will turn it on when it is on. Mine, got two of them one for disposal and other one for front door light so I know its on outside. I don't think home depot has the right one your looking for. Electric supply stores got plenty of them.

Preferred Leviton, they are good quality at reasonable price, they are better one but cost too much $. Either Neon or LED is fine.

BTW, the garbage disposal should have shut itself off after several minutes of dry run. Looks like yours got defective thermal protection on it. You should see red button on bottom of the garbage disposal. If it is there, then that's likely defective. But if it is not there or does not have built in protection then it may be too old or outdated and you would want it to replace.

Yea I noticed that when I read the description ... but it said it had a locator light and a on indicator light as well ... just figured it would just need to be a regular lighted switch not a 3 way switch but that one was the first to come up when i searched for it ...

They do. I just don't leave big chunks on the plate, but I don't care about tiny stuff or liquids or residue, it all goes in the dishwasher and everything comes out nice and sparkly.
 
Yeah, I use 3-way switches interconnected with phone/doorbell signaler and carbon monoxide alarm. Very transparent and Deaf friendly!
