Anyone here know a lot about allergies? I have NO idea what the heck is causing me to have these allergic reactions but its now affecting my asthma and giving me hives, rashes, and spots of dry skin but a weird texture which has since gone away..My doctor dismissed me going for more allergy testing when I brought it up last week since I don't think I'm lactose intolerant but allergic to a milk protein or something..and now i'm getting all these other symptoms and have no idea what it is...ugh..very frustrated

Taken any medicines in the past few weeks? I'm allergic to Sulfer which ususally doesn't show up till near the end of taking the medicine w/it or even a little after.

As a nurse, do you wear the layex gloves? Contact something at work?

what sulfer, medicine or thing? Id like to know. thanks.

I've had chronic hives for more than three years. The doctors don't know why. I've had blood tests, skin tests, food diaries, clothing and laundry experiments, urine and stool analysis. No answers. Sometimes they never figure it out.

1) I spelled it wrong (always do). Sulfur
2) I believe it was in an antibiotic. My daughter is also allergic.
3) I got an "all over" rash as I recall. It was many years ago.

I took a skin allergy test last year. It was quite agonizing because I had to wear a skin allergy test on my entire back for 3 days. It was very very very itchy. Turned out that I'm allergic to a chemical substance (adhesive stuff) used in medical tape! No wonder!

I'm also allergic to some metallic substance found in many cosmetic stuff.

wish I can help. Coincidentally, my good friend just got accepted to one of the world renowned hospital in Colorado known for allergy study. She wants to be an allergist.

what I can think of is that a new allergy can happen at any time.

I agree. It is probably a new allergy you developed. Unless you changed your laundry soap recently, bathsoap, anything else that comes in contact with your skin.

Could be something you are eating as well.

Pets? Sometimes changing you pets flea shampoo or putting flea medication on it can cause people to react. Or developing an allergy to the pet.

oh, i should check the medicine if it have sulfur. I know my son has a mild allergy with amoxillican if he takes amoxillican then he would have rashes all over his body. But again, he still got rashes from something else that I have been struggling to figure out with.

Thanks! I did not think of that one becuase he's taking two medicines that are for allergies so i need to look at the sulfur. If it does, then i ll let doctor know about it.

Switch cosmetic products? I got a bad skin reaction after switching to a new deodorant and then still switching back to my "normal" deodorant. I've concluded that I'm now allergic to all deodorant with aluminum in it. I've switched to non-aluminum and all is well now.

Yep, I always tell doctors & pharmacists that I'm allergic to it.

Just small clarification. The allergy would be do to sulfa- as in sulfonamides drugs.

Alicia as some suggestions have been given here is some things that may help expound further:
1- Have history already of allergies? It sounds as if you do. People can often develop progressively worse allergies to things they have already been allergic to in the past.

2- Any exposures to anything new in your environment?

3- Have you checked your local pollen index's to see if you can associate any recent spikes with specific pollens with worsening of your symptoms. You should be able to find ongoing records for your local online.

4- This was already touched on, but have you started any new meds recently? Or if you take meds for the asthma or allergies already, have you stopped or changed doses of any of those recently?

5- Mentioned already, but yes, try and see if you have changed anything in the home recently (soaps, detergents, any aerosolized items, topicals, makeups) also check your air filter in your AC/central air, replacing or cleaning that can make a big difference.

By carefully and systematically going through this rough checklist you may either associate or be able to isolate what may be causing the new allergies. It can help your doctor with suggesting any new allergy meds or histamine blockers. After all that and you still don't have relief, seeing an allergist would be recommended or even dermatologist. I hope this helps Alicia and you are able to get some relief soon.

Thanks for the clarification...I know I always get it wrong, but hopefully the doctor's offices know what I'm talking about.

yes don't worry too much, anyone in medicine should easily know exactly what you mean.

Check the gloves you use for class.

In the Pharmacology Lab I steer clear of the powdered gloves. I did not know it at the time. I am not allergic to the latex but am allergic to the powder in the gloves. My hands and arms would itch and break out each time I used it. Now I use Powder Free gloves. :)

The powder in the glove could also be irratating your asthma.

I don't know what to say but hope you find what is causing from!;)

We found out when I was in training to be a CNA that I was allergic to the powder in gloves and also to Betadine solution. This was back in the 80's. Currently my list of allergies grows.

I know where your going with this...

Alicia,

Latex allergy is something you need to be aware of. It's very common in the health care field. If you're using latex gloves or equipment with latex that might be your problem.

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to histamine. A person can be allergic to almost anything. To really be sure you have an allergy to something, you may need to see an allergist and be tested.

Hope you feel better soon, girl!
