I just started learning ASL. Its been amazing.

 I have never heard of Ghana using ASL as it is mostly from USA and Canada. I thought that Ghana is from Africa and they have their own sign language instead of ASL. Every country have their own sign language different than we are using. Why would the deaf people or children want to use ASL even hearing people can speak two to four different languages? That is one thing I don't understand. :hmm:

Their primary language is English.

look at the second line.

Here is one article that talks about sign language in Ghana. It is not ASL. You guys are looking at spoken languages.

You can find out more by Googling for "Sign language used in Ghana."

There are ASL Deaf schools, ministries, and such. ASL is currently the main sign language of Ghana.

ASL is very common in eastern Africa. I learned that today from googling it.

"ASL Ghana" is all you need.

ASL Ghana is all you need if all you want to know about is ASL in Ghana.

The article I posted is about one specific sign language for a specific town in Ghana , which is sort of like Martha's Vineyard was here. It has a huge deaf population with a specific sign language.

Yeah, same goes for their spoken language. Each town probably has their own spoken language since there are way more than 500 of them in Ghana.
So, since English is the official language there - I wouldn't be afraid to assume ASL is the "official" signed language there.

I would bet you are correct. But I think the missionaries may have to work a little harder than they think they will.

I bet in Ghana they have a lot of different signs than we have here in the US. After all, look at all the regional differences we have here in the States. Not only regional, but generational, too. I'm kind of surprised they use ASL instead of BSL.

That is SO awesome suzuluvs27! God bless your efforts! I've been thoroughly enjoying learning ASL and have just started my Interpreter training at college... loving every bit of it! I'm hoping that I will be able to use it to further God's Word as well, in some way.

I'm still confused as to what Ghana's official spoken language being English has to do with their signed languages. For instance, England's language is predominately English. However, the signed language used there is called British Sign Language (BSL) which does not resemble American Sign Language (ASL). However I do find the document about Adamorobe Sign Language very interesting.

God bless the missionary effort in Ghana.

THe video the missionaries are taking are in ASL. Speculating on whether the intended audiences will understand as ASL is not the only sign system in use in Ghana.

Depends. There's a lot of American missionary works.

Singapore, Philippines and a few other countries adopted ASL.

I happen to know a few Deaf immigrants that employ sign systems similar to the ASL/LSF root languages; one of them insist what they learned IS ASL, even though I couldn't understand them.
