There is a local college that offers a couple of non-credit ASL classes and I registered for one online tonight; It is in the Spring. Awesome!

Four (or five) years ago I was taking my first ASL class ever. The teacher was a deaf man. During the entire course he ridiculed me and put me down for (what I thought was) no reason at all. He was very upset with me for some reason. Then it dawned on me as to why he treated me so poorly. Earlier during that course he and I met in the hallway- just outside the classroom. He was trying to communicate something to me using his voice. I tried so very hard to decipher what he was trying to say but I just could not. His words blended into each other to the point that no comprehension was expressed. He did not seem angry with me during that meeting. But later, during the entire course, he attacked me with signs that were used only to bring me down. It was awful.

Congratulations!!

What made you get interesting in the deaf?

Go for it !! It is really fun for you to particular ASL course and make new Deaf people. Are you considering to become an interpreter?

The manual language (ASL) is what got me interested. It is such a beatiful language; challeging to learn too. I adore it!

One day I will be an Interpreter (terp?), but it seems so far away. I find it extremely hard to read others signs/fingerspelling- experienced signers sign so very fast that my eyes can't catch it all. Eventually it will all fall into place for me and I will reach my goal(s). I must be patient and persistent on this journey into the Deaf culture.

He can be your interpreter for your doctor appointment when it's time for your pap test. :giggle:

If, he willing to see my spread legs and bloody on the pap smear equipment. When he vomited,

it is your responsibility to clean up in the doctor office. You ask for it....

By the way, I prefer a female interpreter ! I am afraid, male interpreter will

Great. Now dont limit yourself to the classroom. Go out socialize with other deaf people and get deaf chicks. they re awesome in the bed

Good for you, AquaBlue. And I agree, learn the basics in the classroom, and then venture out into the Deaf community. That is where your real learning will take place. Keep us posted on your progress!

Congrats !! I hope you have a great time - and as the previous posters have said ... as much as classroom time is important ... socializing with Deaf, and especially with native ASLers (deaf and CODA) it very important ...

DAW is the last full week in Sept - if there's anything cool going in in your area !!! it's the perfect opportunity to meet people and get involved !

ASL PAH !

oops , sorry ... DAW = Deaf Awareness Week

Around here at least it's a week full of ASL and Deaf "stuff" we get together for plays, theatre (the local School for the Deaf) , bowling, socials ... all kinds of things, and best of all it's a "requirement" that ASL students attend ... so it's very student / new to ASL / hearing friendly !!!

I LOVE DAW

I think he/she might mean Deaf Gathering or Social Events. I am sure that if you research in your area, you should find deaf social events whereas once or twice a month deaf people get together at coffee or bar to have the opportunity for socializing and networking.
