I have the solution the the Captioning in theaters problem!

Just don't ever go to movie theatre and await until it release on DVD to watch at home. Save cost and trouble.

Some movies, even new releases don't come captioned on DVD. I'm running into that with Harry Potter and Twilight and some others. IT doesn't say it has captiones, the DVD player can run what's not there, but the Playstation 2 sometimes can. Go figure!!

I've basically given up on movies and TV. (I do have 3 TV's with captioning capabilities) I'd just rather read the books if available.

Be careful before you patient it and stuff...

Some jaggoffs will patient an idea and let it get buried in red tape.

Then wait for someone else come up with the same idea, patent it and copyright it. When the person makes a buttload of money, the original patent holder will file a lawsuit for millions.

It's a lazy way to make money.

My TV has totally customizable CC display. I have several fonts and sizes to choose from. I can change the text and background color in addition to the ability to adjust the opacity of the background. I am fairly sure that technology would be available in newer theaters. You should get a patent. If you don't, someone else will and then they could issue you a cease and disist order. I respect your willingness to do it just to get it done but you have to make sure you protect yourself too. Beware of patent scammers out there too. I would go to a patent lawyer if you are serious about persuing a patent.

It also requires you to get an approval from FDA. It would be an awful expensive for you to get started.

In a general idea, it might cost you the range from $10,000 to $50,000. After that, you will have to go thru the process for your patent that would take 3 to 15 years to complete and approved because thousands of applications are mailed to the Patent Company every month. Oh, that's another big fee. Plus, you might have to pay your lawyer for your patent paperwork so that no one steals your documents. (I read about it on a government website a few years ago.)

It's because, for example, your TV equipment might interfere someone who has a pacemaker or some people who carry their inhaler device (microchip) in a movie theater. It's no joke. I think that you should avoid the complication for the wireless, and just use the wire to plug it. Otherwise, you might be sued at the theater. I don't mean to scare you, but be wise and think twice.

If you ignore the FDA, then I don't know what would happen, but I am sure that they will find you and penalize you a big fine. That's why I don't like the FDA because it cost too much money.

Do have a solution for watching shows on TV that have no CC? I like to watch the old shows from the 50's and CC was not out then and the station running the shows are not able to put CC in ! I called Comcast and the woman this

Captioning Visor...that sounds a bit awkward when it comes to watching movies. I can see it when talking to people but I would assume it's a bit different situation. Well anything that's better than rear window captioning, I'll take.

Thank you everyone.

I'm wondering about this patent thing. Don't get me wrong. I'm always up to making money when I can but when it comes to this my main goal is to see it installed in theaters. Should I still worry about patent when it comes to this? I don't want to look like I just want money for this. I mainly want to see it offered in theaters.

Oh and there's one issue I need to work out. You know how when subtitles are white over a white background the text can't be seen? This is why TV closed captioned have a black background and most subtitles have a black border. Well, so far I don't think my method will work with multiply colors. It might still be possible but so far no luck with my limited knowledge on it. Which is one of the reasons I'm seeking help on it.

If any of you have any ideas to explore on the text color issue let me know.

You should watch the movie called " flash of genius" . It about the guy who came up with idea the intermittent windshield wiper and Detroit automakers steal the guy idea! It may show how to made sure this does not happen to you!

Yes, I do have a solution to this.

You can also watch TV episodes on line. Then use the information in this post to find the matching subtitles and watch them on your computer.

A good source to find the TV shows and movies is http://ipb.quicksilverscreen.com/index.php

There are sections there on that forum for TV shows that you can search and request them as well.

If your thinking about color blind captions which are visible when you are wearing a certain filtered glasses, It been tested and tried in the past, trying googling and you might get hit results on about it. I think the problem with this method is that you have to be sitting close to the screen to see the captions. Last I heard about this was probably in the middle 90's so perhaps they have better filters now days to try.

Also it been tested where you wear a special glasses which actually display caption on it, sort of like those TV glasses back in the late 90's. Again googling will proably get you some result on it too.

I think it even possible now day to create a glasses that is lightweight and wireless to be able to display some caption on the lens compare to the bunky ones back in the late 90's where you had to wear a box on the belt and plug it into a jack in the seat.

You're talking about micro displays. You can use them right now in theaters if you have a small computer. An iphone might even work with the right App. All you'd have to do is download the subtitles online (They are usually available about a week after movies hit the theaters so you still won't make opening night).

Next you make a movie file that your computer can play that supports subtitles. But the movie is made of just a black background image. So the video will play but there's no picture and it'll display the subtitles. You can do this now with an iPhone but you'll have to look down at the phone and back up at the movie. That's not easy but its' possible. If you plug a micro display into the iphone (or any small computer with the right software) then you have what you where describing.

TechBill - Thanks for the link. So far my idea isn't there.

That is the second one I was talking about

The first one I was talking about is color-blind caption ... The caption is already printed on the movie negitive but it in color blind spetreme area which naked human eyes that cannot see it unless they wear glasses that have filter to make those colors visible to them.

Billy May type of people only want 2 thing .....

Market it cheap -- Product cost 3 dollar and they sell for 19.95
Sell en masses -- Something that every home want to buy

I don't think his idea will fit in their range

He probably need to find someone that specizilies in movie equipments.

I been in movie business for many years and every year there is a Motion Picture Industry Convention Tradeshow and maybe it would be best starting place to go and talk to many manfactures that specializes in techinal area for movie theatre business.

This year Motion Picture Industry Convention Tradeshow will be held in Orlando Florida Here a web link - Motion Picture Industry Convention - Movie Theatre Tradeshow - Cinema Design

ahh ok, good point. it was just a thought. movie equipt good idea:hmm:

I have thought about this subject a lot myself. I was thinking about a language translator on an LED screen for the radio and for all manner of music. I would like to know what the words are that everyone else hears. My thoughts on the theater: I like the theater experience too and plays as well. Why can't we have language translation equipment that picks up the sounds as they are happening and translate and send them to us in any language we prefer to a small LED screen that can either be held in the hand and also has a telescoping wand that can take it up to a heighth that we like while sitting and watching the screen at the same time?
I have talked about this subject with people who hear well(like I say until this forum I have not been around people like me)... I was surprised to find out their concern and it was quick too was the use of the equipment like an eavesdropping device. Something I had not thought of at all.

We'll have things like that soon. The voice recognition technology is constantly improving. Someday it'll get to the point where it'll understand all speech, multiple language and also be able to distinct one sound from another.

So we'll basically have real life closed captioning. We'll be able to read what's being said around us or over the phone in real time without the need of any kind of relay operator or interpreter.

We're almost there already. In fact I bet if someone who creates high technology suddenly lost their hearing I bet they'd focus on this problem really quick.

Does it involved with the wireless for your idea?
