Ever Reach a point that you feel like you no longer want to wear your hearing aids? If so,tell why?

Yeah when I was about 17 I just put my hearing aid away for good because I can't hear anything at all only tiny whisper if very loud noise happened like drop dish in sink. Can't even hear yelling so I just put it away after knowing its not the battery and I thought that time hearing aid was broken. And 3 years later I found out I'm profoundly deaf lol. Then tried to wear one with more power (one I had was wussy aid for mild and moderate loss) so I tried out oticon sumo ds and it was painful, very dizzy, feel totally unbalanced, muffled sound and can't hear most of speech. So I got CI. I had NO choice really I wanted to hear so bad and I can't live with silence anymore. But I'm totally happy with it, that's important part :)

I wore hearing aids from the age of two until the age of twelve. I am not 18 and have just started wearing them again. Every night when I get home the first thing I do is take them off. I just feel overwhelmed and frustrated all day because of all the sounds.

Yeah, I had similar experiences to Skullchick's and Jenny's. I wore different hearing aids for almost 20 years.

1. No matter how many molds were fitted and refitted, they eventually hurt after several hours and had to come out. Strangely, the behind-the-ear aids were less painfull. Maybe it was they came later with better inserts, or maybe I just got used to them.

2. Yes, sometimes I couldn't wait to get alone so I could take the damned things out to cut background noises and massage my ears, ha ha ha.

3. It's been said lots of times here at AD, but when some hearies see I had devices, they expected perfect hearing. If not, it must be my fault for not paying attention or "not trying hard enough."

4. They no longer do me any good. I miss not hearing some sounds, but I don't miss those infernal pains in the . . . ears.

I notice if I do not wear my aids I don`t get headaches as much as I do if I have them on. I am thinking of giving them up,I don`t know yet. I will be going for my hearing test again next month and I will be getting two new aids.

I cant live without them. My hearing aid is broken and I have been living with complete silence for 3 weeks now and I noticed that I am having bad tinnatus. Ugh!

Some people get headaches or tinnatus with hearing aids..I am the opposite. It is weird. Thanks!

Just some information to share .... do you realize that if you do have some hearing with the help of your h/aid and you don't wear your h/aid for ages, you can lose whatever hearing you've got.

I went without my hearing aids for 4 years one time, didnt lose my hearing. U may lose listening skills but not hearing.

Ok Shel .... was just wondering .... as I was told this by a audie.

Interesting..I was told the opposite by an audi too! Maybe these audis dont know wht they are doing! LOL!

Yeah, I think the audies meant auditory memory but I'm not sure if I buy the db loss factor, tho.

In a way she/he is right. If you don't get sound input then several years later you will lose your auditory memory, as your brain will cleverly divert the neurons that use to be dedicated to listening to something else. My audie told me that auditory memory lasts for about 9 years - however I imagine that there is considerable variability depending on the individual.

You will still probably have the same hearing loss on paper though.

I sympathise. Bad tinnitus is the pits! I hope the aids can be fixed for you soon.

Thanks for the clarification, R2. :)

I try not to wear my hearing aids unless I absolutely without a doubt entirely need them, which is not that often (usually no more than half an hour to an hour a day) They give me headaches.

I did get to the point that I just could not take my Hearing Aids for the last 5 years. I developed migraines and tinnutis from them. At that point, I started working to get cochlear implants. I did keep wearing them at work and activities, but as soon as I got home, I took them off.

I wear mine everyday! Some days when I get tired or cranky I just pull them out to get a sense of peace and quiet. I depend on my hearing aids to get me through my work and daily activities.

I wear mine everyday too. unless my ears are really hurting, but i also depend on my ha and feel lost without it when it needs to get fixed or anything.
