It is 100% confirmed that I have Usher Syndrome Type I (CDH23) and most of peripheral vision are gone. I have 90 degrees (45 degrees per one eye) that is 20 degrees below the legal threshold for driving so it means I'm unable to drive until there is cure or treatment or wait for driveless vehicle to become available.

Right now, I'm very grieving about loss of driving and don't tell me to get over it - it will make worse. I don't have much alternative transportation, also no bus in our county and we do have Uber/taxi, but they are expensive for far away from major businesses. I have to wait for my families to work on relocation to denser suburb with major businesses so it will make Uber/taxi cheaper.
 
Wow that just sucks. I know your pain- it's something I worry about for myself. I've been lucky. I have at least one friend who never knew I had a driver's license- she had always thought I didn't drive because of my vision (aphakic and reaaaaally thick glasses in college).

I'd offer to drive but a) too far away unless I move somewhere close lol and b)generally people don't ride with me... I'm not a big fan of driving with other people in the car (It's been years since I did that too..many man years).
 
I'm very sorry that you got bad news. It's understandable that you have to go thru a grieving process because you're experiencing a loss. I hope a better arrangement can be worked out for your transportation needs.
 
I'm sorry, I'm in the same situation, and yes it really does suck.
 
If only driverless vehicles were a thing. I don't drive but do need to get around. Would really love a driverless car.
 
Fell ur pain, Foxrac...At one time, the specialist suspected usher's with me too...but luckily, it wasn't...just a lot of trauma to my left eye and surgery "might" help it...had a lens implant to my right...but still have problems here and there....Won't be too long before I stop driving also...but I'd rather ride than drive in all that crazy traffic in my City. I don't drive at night, only in an emergency or necessity. And my super nice neighbor s always willing to drive for me.
 
Driver-less cars do exist. I think Mercedes is the leader in this technology. However, I'll bet they're six fugures in cost.

Good news, I suppose, is that like any andvancement it will come down in price as it's accepted.

VERY sorry for your condition. I just had cataract surgery. Vision is much worse than before surgery. But mine can be corrected with glasses all the way to 20/20. Again, very sorry but thanks for giving me some much needed perspective.

Sorry to hear about the news. That really sucks! The grieving process will subside but it's going to take time. Hang in there. A friend of mines old girlfriends brother had RP and we heard that he is taking part in a stem cell study, so there might be a treatment down the road, so don't give up hope.
 
Wow. I'm so sorry to know that. But, I second Seb. Don't give up on your hope! Hang on in there.
 
I know of at least 7 deaf blind- probably a few more- people I haven't thought of in years (varying degrees of loss and varying reasons) who would benefit from something like that. Two live in/near DC so public transportation and walking has been a bonus for them. This is one thing I'm keeping an eye on as I fall into that category (or likely will).
 
I'm sorry to hear about your bad news. Hang in there and don't give up.
