I am exhausted!

Lipreading doesn't bother my eyes, I've done it since toddler so I'm used to it. I can't live without lipreading as I use it all the time, whether I use oral or ASL. I can read books for hours without my eyes get tired, as I used to have Captioner as intrupter in Elementry to High school years.

I born raised oral and hearing school.. Pretty crappy for me..
Transfered New School for Deaf ONLY.. I'm glad I learned it lot much better ASL than listening stare people's lip... Making me tired instant and having hallucination.... Oh please.. I pray GOD, please whoever person want talk long yak yak... make my eyes shut down and ain't pay attention their lips.. !
UGH!

Eh, so you said you never get tired of looking at sign language for long period of time?

It happened to me. Is that weird especially if I use sign language as primary way of communication?

It usually happens in school enviroment. Sometimes it do happen in social event, especially with pure ASL users.

I nearly got a headache trying to pay attention to people communication in pure ASL. lol Yeah it's even tough on a PSE user.

Shel90, I am wondering if you tried to take a break in-between to help your eyes get some rest? I am just curious, did you spending time lipreading for few hours or all day everyday for two weeks or what?

That's what I did in school, if I began to feel tired I look away from interpreter for a moment, even risking miss important informations, but it's better than hurt myself in the end of day.

I took breaks but my eyes havent done straight lipreading for that long in years so I think day after day of just straight lipreading really was hard on them.

My eyes dont get like that in an ASL environment but when I am watching a terp for a long time, yes, they do get tired.

Maybe watching the terp and lipreading takes more concentration than being in a group of friends just chattering away in ASL.

Interesting...

I feel comfortable to watch people's lip movement/lip while they use sign languages. I can't follow their sign language without speak from their lips. I grew up to use to have both lip movement/lipreading and sign languages on the same time.

Yes, I can read people's lips - depend on how difference lip movements... example - heavy beard... hard to read... Yes, it's stress to watch people's lipreading without sign languages for long hours.

I don't blame ya! That make my eyes go pop out!!!

My mother use to make me sit in front of a t.v. all the time when I was little with the sound turn down, she said I can make myself hear if I wanted too.(It never work)So I learn to lip read and It`s gets bad on the eyes. most of the time two hearing aids just don`t do it anymore. (lip reading is my hearing )and sometimes It hurts my eyes to try to keep up with the person that I am talking too.

Pepsiwoman, I'm sorry about when you were little. So many hearing people think deafies just don't try hard enough. I'm an old man and still am told I could "try to pay attention more" and "might understand better."

Once when I was tired of non-stop yakety-yak, a person even remarked I had "selective hearing." I asked if that was something like her having "selective good sense."

I have been lip reading ever since I was a child. Especially when I have to learn to lip read in japanese, spanish, and enlgish and boy, it's a crazy challenge but I am fortunate to able to lip read, speak and sign!

Does that ever happen to any of you? You use sign language for a long period of time and then for some reason, you have to use you lipreading skills for a substantial period of time only to find yourself feeling more tired or eyes burning?

YES. Eyes burn, head aches, and so tired. But many hearing people think lipreading is so easy, almost like magic! :squint: Lipreading is hard and is hard work also.

I was born deaf. I did not start lipreading until I was eight and half years old almost nine years old. I probably had some home sign language to communicate, not like ASL. Later I learned to use ASL at the age of 20 years old. It was and is hard to lipread and I have to strain my eyes to see what people are saying trying to understand. Lipreading is very difficult and I prefer ASL. Yeah, I have to strain my eyes for lipreading, close captioned on T.V., and ASL which is a lot easier. Using and depending on our eyes for visual is very important to all of us, deafies, especially when you are on the computer like typing on AD. I noticed my bags under my eyes in the mirror which mean that my eyes are tire. Sometimes I used a very wet warm cloth or a wet cold cloth over my eyes, which ever is comfortable for your eyes and just massage your eyes to feel better. It work for me. Maybe you can try this to feel better with a warm or cold cloth from the faucet water and just twist the wet cloth before you apply it to your eyes. It really feel great.

Funny thing is I always tell family/friends

that I can be a private investigator cuz I may miss the conversation at my table but I could tell you what people at the next couple of table are talking about just by reading their lips!:giggle:
