RebelGirl - I am sorry that you had gone thru the crazy thing going on.
I learned that Dr. Oz on Oprah's TV show a few weeks ago talked about a thyroid problem. He said that this medicine is not going to help you. I cannot remember the whole story - he said that they lack of exercise and overweight due poor nutrients and other medicine side effects. I don't believe this until he showed us a proof that his patients got all better by following his instructions. It was a huge successful. They throw all the stupid medicines in the trash. I am not making up this story. I am very impressed because he knows that medicine industrials want to make money. I didn't want to talk about the money issue. Please go on line and read the Oprah show. You will find some info on Google about Dr. Oz (Dr. Hehmet Oz). He and his partner are so wonderful and told us the truth.
I am cutting down my thyroid medicine's dose slowly and do eat proper and exercise...

How serious can underactive be?Rebel,
Don't over worry with this thyroid stuff, k. After period of time you will have the correct dose of thyroxine titrated with help of MD and follow up lab tests to verify serum level of T4 and TSH. Yes it is true Hypothyroidism can cause serious life-threatning condition called a myxedema coma. This is in cases that are severe, left untreated and also occurring concurrently with other diseases. Thyroid gland is responsible in assisting with many metabolic functions of body. People with an overactive thyroid gland (also called Graves disease) have own side effects, most seriously being a "thyroid storm" which can be life threatning and cause circulatory system collapse. There are multiple therapies to treat Graves disease, whereas with hypothyroid (aka cushings syndrome I believe) only needs thyroid hormone supplementation.
Good luck with this Rebel and hope your bronchitis resolves as well.
well, i actually thought to myself that none of my family has it or that i didn't know if they did. my sister just told me that my mom had hypothyroid disease and had to have her right gland taken out of her neck. I asked how old was she.. she said she was in her early 30's. well, i was thinking... great... i'm in my early 30's and i have it.. so i must have gotten it after my mom. but not sure about the rest of my family. I got a dr's appt, I'll know more. How did you get Hypothyroid disease ? From your family's genetic or hereditary ?
I am sorry that you have it. You are in my thoughts and prayers for your health to get well.
