Hi,

Suffered my bilateral hearing loss at 21 due to military service, over the next 20 years it got much worse and now everything from 1000 on up is gone.
I've just been implanted on 8/12 with Med EL's EAS system as part of a study.
It combines a CI for the highs which are long gone with a HA for the lows. Big part of the surgery is ability to maintain the residual hearing.
A special shorter array and surgical technique is used.
If I ever lose the residual the array can be fully activated but hopefully that won't happen.

Well activation on 9/9 for CI and then a month later for HA part.

If anyone has any advice or thoughts fire away.

Bruce

first, welcome to AD,

Wow, this is first i have heard of.... Would be very interested in hearing how you got on with them...

I was born Profoundly deaf, no high freqencies at all, i could hear very little low freq with HA. Now had been activicated with Freedom nearly 2 weeks ago.... i can hear the highs!! the lows will eventually come, Boy the world is so noisy!

anyway... stay on board and do let us know the outcome.

Here is Link for anyone who don't know about this Hybrid Cochlear Implant.

Hi, will let you know how I do.

Besides Med EL (thanks for including the link, I should have), Cochlear is running a study too.
They actually were the first, but made a bad call about the array. It was limited to only highs and if anyone lost the residual (which happened several times) then needed to be implanted a second time. Plus I believe the HA was s different unit not intergrated.
Anyway they are close to opening the study again, waiting on IRB approval so both options will be available.

For the Med EL side, call them and ask about the study if you're interested and they will tell you who in the area is part of it and what the process is, I don't want to misspeak so I won't try to give the criteria.
