Hurricane Dennis

Well after all of hurricane, I am planning to drive down to South Mississippi, Biloxi (casino city), New Orlean (sinful city), and Florida... to
see where the damage at....

I feel sad about Pensacola. Hubby and I met and married there, and our daughter was born there. I hate to see it get hit again. :(

Hurricanes are not fun. We lived thru hurricane Hugo in 1989. It was awful. It hit during the night, so we couldn't see what was happening. We stayed in the hall of our house. We expected to die because the walls of the house were shaking so badly, and we could hear the trees crashing down outside.

Evacuations are awful also. We evacuated for hurricane Floyd. Before we left our house, I took pictures, looked around, sighed, and said, "good-bye house." I didn't expect to see it again. I expected it to be destroyed. The traffic lines were long even though they opened up both sides of the highway for one-way traffic. The cars didn't move. We got stuck in a long line of traffic in a remote area. No bathrooms, nothing for about 12 hours. Many people ran out of gas before they even left the city limits. They used duct tape to secure the elderly people from the nursing home in their bus seats. One died in his seat and no one knew it for hours. We had to drive from Charleston, SC, to Knoxville, TN, before we could find a vacant motel room.

We really need to pray for the people in danger of the hurricane.

If you are going just to sight see, please don't. If you are going to volunteer help, go with an organized group such as Red Cross. After a hurricane disaster, sightseers just get in the way and waste precious resources such as water and food.

I always wondered why so many homes in Florida are so cheaply built. You'd think that updating building code would prevent a lot of the structural damage to homes, which is the costliest sort of damage.

My grandfather's condo was built of cinder block and the windows reinforced with hurricane shutters.

5 hurricanes in less than a year?! Yeah, I'd say mama nature has it in for that peninsula.

It is best not to go alone but to go with an experienced organization. Also, you need to bring all the clothes, food, water, and supplies that you will use. You can't buy anything there. Remember, there will be no available rooms, no running water, no electricity, no AC (Florida in the summer), and no gas for your car. It will be hard to drive around town because there will be no street signs, traffic signs, or working traffic lights. Some of the roads will be detoured or closed off. Usually there will be curfews set up (sunset to sunrise). Some communities do not allow non-residents to enter. They set up roadblocks and check ID's. After Hugo, we had to show our driver's license to the National Guardsmen to prove that we were residents.

I am so glad that Hurricane Dennis is OVER! Yesterday I was kind of worried that it would hit here where I live until the weather man said it would go toward Mississippi, I felt better. Later in a little while, it went weak and more weaker so it wasn't really bad storm as we thought it would be really bad.

Will we have another hurricane, or what?

miss p~ of course we're going to have another one.. maybe not anytime soon but we will have many more to come. This is a mother nature calling.. anything else can happen anywhere, anytime.

By the way, Dennis wasn't as bad as Ivan which is good, could have gotten worse.

It sure is windy here with a 20 to 30 mph in North Alabama

yea thats right.. behind tropical hurriance five...

Maybe all these hurricanes will start discouraging people from moving to Florida.

It is too perfect of a target!

Yeah, Hurricane Dennis wasn't that bad as I thought either. I stayed up til 1 a.m. and nothing really happened here in central Alabama except rain and winds. I expected tornados due to the low temperature than normal. But its a good thing it was not so bad.
