Headed out to pick up my buddy and head to the salvage yards to find some replacement parts for the truck.... Hope to find everything or most in one stop. well, here goes....

Just needs a headlight lens to pass inspection Tuesday ( Im hoping) but if I find the rest of the parts its all the better. I talked to the inspection station already about the truck and that's what they say as long as no suspension parts were damaged on the underside which I couldn't see anything crawling under it so far.

Be careful driving into the salvage yards , I knew a guy that got a flat tire when he drove over a nail in a salvage yard. I told the guy I bet the owner put nails out so people will have to buy a tire too.

Our salvage yards don't allow customers to drive thru the yards. Either the customer walks thru the area (with permission), or the worker drives the customer to the vehicles and picks out the parts. We only drive up to the office area.

If we did get a flat there we certainly wouldn't buy our tires from there. We go to tire stores for tires.

It was the salvage yard driveway and not right in the yard . So that is was the guy was surprised he ran over a nail. I would never buy a used tire either.

I would be surprised too, since cars aren't built with nails. :giggle:

Just found a fender after 6 hours of looking at 2 lots

Wow, that great work being able to put fender on yourself. Why did it take 6 hours? Wouldn't you have called to see if fender was available?

The vehicles are mixed in so you have to walk up and down aisle after aisle to find the vehicle youre looking for. If you call a salvage yard, they will just say yeah, come look and then get there and never find one.
Sometimes the guys working are cool, if youre short they will sell it for what you got, other times they jack the hell out of the prices. First yard said $35 for a fender...where I found mine at the second yard they charged me $52 and this is a take it off yourself deal... Ill never go back to that yard, but they did have 1 item I needed.

In Kansas City area (both Missouri and Kansas side). They have several "Pick n Pull" that allow you to walk through junkyard and pull parts yourself. You must pay $2 and sign insurance (just a quick signature) and must bring your own tools. They forbid any torches or anything that have flames. I snuck in Mapp Gas torch hidden in my toolbox and it was a huge time saver because lot of rusted bolts. I attracted several guys near me and begged me to help him loosen frozen bolts with my Mapp Torch

I wanted to go by one of these places to get all the nice options my car could have come with, but didn't and couldn't afford if it did. Maybe one day soon I'll look one up and hope they have the same car in there with all the goodies.
