Hey there.
(Yes, YOU!).
I'm a deaf guy from Australia, grew up strictly oral (I still shudder when I see an AVT textbook... Long memories...) Successfully used an implant for many years, and learnt to speak very well, but it was an insane amount of work.
I grew up in the country, without a "Deaf Community", and only discovered them a few years ago. Since then I've been rapidly learning Auslan, which is already my preferred langauge.
Here's a short story I wrote ages ago, before I started learning Auslan. It was very personal at the time, but then for some reason I showed someone, then they thought it was fantastic, so they convinced me to show it to other people, blah blah blah... Anyway, might as well show it here, given that this is an "Introduce yourself" post, here goes.
Enjoy
Just joined alldeaf.com because I wanted to network more, and see who's out there.

Worlds of silence
-------------------------------------------
It is the silence I remember first. Other details come back later. The
schoolyard, full of brightly coloured children, running on the lush
green grass. The vibrations of footsteps. But no sound. Deathly.
Quiet. Separating.
Today, the silence has disappeared. The noisy chatter of the crowd, the
robotic sound of the loud speaker, and the loud, disorganised youth band
permeates through my body.
I withdraw to quieter locations, enjoying the vibrant colours of
outside. The sensation of the wind through my hair, or to immerse myself
into worlds unknown, skillfully crafted by talented writers. Often, I
explore our world of information, the world, the world of cyberspace,
and a place where information is more valuable than physical
possessions, yet so abundant.
Their world appears to be a world immersed in sound. Music. Song.
Dance. A world where their very emotions are controlled by sound. An
experience unknown to me.
It is a different world I return to now. A world where chatter is
understood, with difficulty. A strange world where sound is not always
understood. Where music can be appreciated, rarely. A world of chaos
where I move from location to location, from task to task, vaguely
knowing what is happening.
Now I live in yet another world, a world of information overload. A
world where entire careers are based on finding, storing and protecting
information. A world where technological updates bring improvements far
faster than our system of ethics can cope.
A world where technological improvements allow instant communication
between any numbers of people from anywhere on the planet. A world where
people can walk through awe-inspiring sites nature provides. A world
where medical improvements escalate at an ever increasing pace, and
consequently restoring hearing, sight and mobility.
These are the worlds I live in.

Please don't copy that story, thanks. It's MINE! (But I may let you if you ask...)
