Since I'm paying for a dial-up service to Earthlink, my TTY is
now broken so I cannot use TTY until after the repair (probably
in a few weeks) but I cannot wait to use TTY again, but someone
else mentioned that I do NOT need any TTY just to make any
calls from TTY to TTY.. by using HyperTerminal....
Is this true ?
I just found it here on C drive (under Program and Accessories)..
I am afraid to enter the phone nbr there because what if
it might "screw up" my dial-up service ?
How to use this HyperTerminal ? Worth it ?

What do you think of HyperTerminal ? I appreciate
any instructions how to use it properly.

TNKS !!!

You will need some kind of internet connection to be able to use HyperTerminal. I've used HT during my networking lab here at RIT. It's interesting and you get to keep all the converstation. However, I feel that with the growing use of internet, emails, and AIM... there's not much need for phones or TTYs.

VamPyroX is wrong in that you need Internet to use HyperTerminal. Yes, HyperTerminal can be a telnet/ssh client, but it can ALSO be used as a dial-up "dumb terminal".

What you need is a slow dial-up modem with HyperTerminal. You can try dialing your relay service by your dial-up modem (or use the Hayes command "ATDT711"). You'll see CONNECT 2400 followed by your relay operator message... So for those relay services that support modems, you can use HyperTerminal as a substitute TTY. It is very relay service dependent, since not all relay services support PC modem connections.

HyperTerminal is seem userless to me when I had on PC. It show part of garble, mostly. It does work but it make much hard for you to follow.

The bad thing... you cannot answer the incoming call with HyperTerminal. :(

what's wrong with getting a eFLASHER ?
http://www.deafworks.com/eFLASHER/about.html

I thought WinXP users can config their Windows to flash screens whatever sounds comes out. but anyway check eFLASHER because it said it does better than windows do.

As for me, I do not need it with Nextalk cuz I set it to forward a msg to my email when someone call me to leave msg. It can send msg to your pager.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with deafworks at all. I am not employed by them at all. it was merely a suggestion!

Would that waste your time if you don't look at email before you able answer the call?

No. I tell them if they want to call me and if I don't answer, they will just have to leave message and I will get back to them. frankly, I don't get lots of phone calls because they all contacted me via IM or emails than calling via tty or nextalk. no big deal. the reason I have nextalk is for other people that don't contact me regularly.

I don't have an incoming telephone number anymore --

I do have an incoming alphanumeric pager number (for my Blackberry). An operator takes your message and dispatches your spoken message as a transcribed email message to my pager.

So people contact me primarily by fax, pager, IM, email... And if I have to talk on the phone, I call people right back.

illustrator -- not the 850/857/950/957 blackberry models. Besides, I do not want to carry around too many devices.

geez, anyone need to make call while they are out from home or office. It take much quick than doing e-mail or text message or page.

I notice when my big brother (deaf) sent e-mail from his sidekick to my computer. I realized that it took about 2 hours or less to get in my outlook. :| It take so long time for me to resuse him while his car broke down. He was alone and scary. Tsk tsk.

But my blackberry IS A TDD and I can make realtime phone calls with it (ala Wyndtell, but it is not Wyndtell because I am in Canada).

I don't want to carry redundant devices all the time!!!!!

Oh yeah, I remember that one from 1996, when someone introduce me about this device. But how will anyone call back to you? :|

To do that, you need a PC modem in your computer.

I know someone who turned on the Windows Fax service for this purpose. The Automatic Fax is turned off, but Windows XP tells you that the phone line is ringing and asks you to click to answer the call as a fax call. This kind notification can be used for other purposes than fax. The message that gets displayed during Manual Fax Mode is "The phone line is ringing. Click here to answer as a fax call." Just use it as an alert and answer the call using your own preferred method instead of clicking on that message.

You can then jump to another phone with a real TDD, or even instead open up Hyperterminal or another software program -- yes, Hyperterminal would work for incoming calls if used this way -- just type the "ATA" command to answer. This works mainly for incoming relay calls because computer modems don't work with most older TTY's, but works with most relay services (and certain newer TTY's). Make sure your modem is properly configured for incoming relay calls. Although I prefer using my pager for incoming calls.

You can find the special accessible on XP system... Control Panel/accessibility options this one for better eye catching the screen flashing when the sound is BEEP or Chong or Ding or Rings. does not including a MP3 or song musics..

Or if anyone who owns modded PC, best suggestion to buy sound activated Neon or laser in any pc modded websites would works beep, chong, ding, rings and a MP3 or song musics.. I went to Compusa store and they have a sound activated lights..

Sound-activated lights for PC's, usually for decorating a computer, but also extremely useful for a deaf guy:

Just like cellphones vibrators were not originally designed for the deaf, they are making cellphones more accessible, and also these funky "PC decoration lights" accidentally become useful sound-activated lights for your computer! It's nice how mainstream technology proves useful for the deaf as well.

I've been using nextalk for cpl months. Whenever people call me, the window pops up to let me know somebody calling me, it give me 3 options to choose from, by clicking 3 boxes. "answer" "take a message" "hang up" it works great for me... no plm so far. expect for ip relay (on nextalk) it sometime takes longer for them to finally answer my call. :-P I hate those 30 seconds hold. its stupid... I prefer regular operator relay on tty, cuz I can put them on hold as long as I want, not 30 second limit.
