Hello All, and thank you for taking the time to look at my question. I am new to the forum and found this while looking something up for my ASL class. I'm happy to have found this though! My son is 7 months old and had back to back ear infections since he was born. He passed his newborn hearing test which was the OAE style (I believe that is the correct initials) and when he had the same test done at 4 months he had a 10% loss. Two months later he received tubes in his ears to prevent infections. It has almost been a month and he still doesn't appear to hear everything which leads me to believe that the tubes did not help the hearing and the scar tissue from the infections left more damage than the Dr had originally thought. He won't be able to have the BEAR test done for awhile as he was sedated to do the tubes and had a tongue tie that has to be clipped. If I hold my phone behind him there are certain tones that he makes not acknowledgement of and he still makes no sounds other than crying.

Does anyone have any experience with this? We go to the Dr again on Thursday but I'd like to be able to go in with as much information as possible because his lack of hearing concerns me. I have been learning ASL as my foreign language for classes at my University and have been incorporating sign into what I say to him so that either way he is getting either audio and sign communication or at least just the sign as I'm not sure that he really hears me.

Anyhow any help or information would be great to have. Thank you all again!!!

The problem is, that its almost impossible to accuratly tell how well a HOH kid hears.....there's a reason why a lot of us were late dx! It's AWESOME that you're learning ASL already! YAY! One of the good things about having a HOH kid is that you don't need to worry all that much about speech, and can then concentrate on Sign and Deaf stuff....Have you contacted the School for the Deaf yet? You already know he's dhh......the interventions are the same.....

I'm unsure of how to find resources for him? I looked up School for the Deaf Spokane wa but didn't come up with anything.

What jiro said. Some audiologist can be close minded about ASL. Just follow your heart to have both asl and speech therapy. Be sure your kid interacts with other kid who has similar path. Good luck

They should try to an audiologist that specialist in pediatric . NO one knew I was HOH until I was almost 8 YO. I was born 1946 and babies where not giving hearing test.

nipping tongue tie old fashined is there reason dr did that....
talking on behalf of my son he had constant ear infections as did my daughter she had gromits and no problems my son did not and he got mild hof h..
i hope it get sorted out soon but it one of those time will tell situations

Thank you all! We are scheduled for tomorrow. I just wonder how hard it is to tell since he's a baby still and the type of test he's doing. That and I think, probably because of the education I have, that the Dr has an oral perspective in regard to the hearing loss he had a few months ago that he was unconcerned about. He just said he was sure his hearing would come back. But he had fluid in his ears, one especially bad, for months. I'm going to get in touch with the Deaf School I found last night today and see what they have to say.

He was having nursing problems with the tongue tie. My husband and youngest daughter have it to and there speech is hard to understand. My husband ended up with a 4th grade reading level and people thinking he was either Deaf or mentally retarded because of how he talks. So we had the kids tongues done hoping it would help both there speech and the babies nursing.

It was done at an ENT surgery center so no worries!

I was talking about the midwifes in the link I posted , they used their fingernail that was sharpen to cut tongue tie in new born babies.

same problem as I wasn't responding to my name being called :) (that's how I ended up with hearing loss in both ears)

Oh yes! Although back in the day I would have died from a tubal pregnancy five years ago!

Makes perfect sense as he got tubes in his ears and it has probably cleared fluid and problems.
