There's a 'poor' gene?
Hee hee. Good question.
There's a 'poor' gene?
So, these kids are living in the dorms and learning about citizenship, doing their homework, and most importantly...feel safe from the streets.
I wouldn't put too much faith in the system. I was a day student at a residential school. I can tell you without hesitation that many residential students there didn't know their boundaries, manners, etc. Not to mention a large number of them had a habit of doing drugs, getting in trouble, etc.
Thankfully, I had a family who cared enough to learn sign language to communicate with me. I learned a lot from them. You don't learn much from living in a dorm since none of the students have any real life experiences to share. Not even the houseparents.
From what I have seen and heard, I wouldn't send a child to any of these schools. Ever.

Sigh. When I was about ten, my father would threaten to leave me at a deaf institute if I didn't behave. I would cry myself to sleep. Can't help but hate those places even though I have never been in one.
Grendel, I am NOT being all super conservative Republican. I am just saying that with the fact that some poor people may be dealing with really bad stuff, and b/c they may not have as much resources as wealthier families, it might be a good idea for their kids to take advantage of the fact they could live at school. Give them some stabilty and stuff.f poor parents are necessarily bad parents, maybe all poor parents-to-be should be sterilized if they don't meet a certain standard. T
Ditto!!!! Or in unsafe situtions like a dangerous inner city housing development or the Rosebud Indian reservation or in a neighborhood with gangs or whatever. Say for example, a dhh kid lives in Gary Indiana, or East St. Louis or Camden NJ, or Watts or Compton, or the South Bronx, or any other number of dangerous cities or dangerous areas of cities. These are areas with really bad crime problems. Camden NJ even has a lot of drive by shootingsI am all for children staying with their families. However, we know that in reality, many deaf children are left out constantly by their family members or worse, in abusive homes.
Well first of all, putting them in a res school isn't nessarily abandoning them. It's NOT like it was in the old days, where kids were just automaticly sent to Deaf School, or Blind School or the state insitutions for the intelelctucally disabled. It's not warehousing them. It's more like......they live at school, that's all. Granted I personally don't think that little kids should be boarding (unless maybe they're foster kids or from a dangerous or middle of now where area) and that going off to live in a dorm should be reserved for kids who are old enough to spend the night at a friend's house. Remember, virtually ALL res schools now have weekend home policies, and there's videophones and the net and parents are always welcome to visit and everything. There's a lot of family involvement. To me it is like advocating FOR orphanages! Why would you WANT a family to abandon their child?
You are entitled to your opinion.
From what I have seen what happens to kids who have been neglected in their homes and those who got transferred to dorms mmakes me have some faith in these systems.
Not every child should be sent to the dorms. It is up to the family to decide, not me.

Perhaps action should be taken much sooner. If poor parents are necessarily bad parents, maybe all poor parents-to-be should be sterilized if they don't meet a certain standard. This could be assessed as part of the marriage license process and reduce paperwork, or when you update your driver's license.
It would be great of the mainstream schools had deaf ed programs that were modeled after the deaf shool programs. That way the availability would be equal to what it is for mainstream schools. I know that is not likley due to supply and demand but it would be nice and it would address the concerns regarding re-location and some of the negatives associated with some residental programs.deaf schools should be near where people can have good job opportunties so parents can move there. Also, have a affordable apts.
Only reason I would advocate sterlization if the person has two working hands and yet can't/won't learn sign language. Those kind of people are a burden to the deaf people. They are the reason why deaf kids are isolated and lonely.
You talked about sterilization and it is not hard to see that you or others will extend it to deaf population as it was done in the past.
