How to find your home wifi network

Wow, nothing mention key information?

Reba, when you see drop down list of available WiFi connections right? On the list, look at far right where it shows WiFi logo along with strength, do you see padlock next to the signal or no?

If there is no padlock on it, then it is open, unsecured connection available. That one, you can just log in and use right away. If it has padlock then it is secured and requires username and password.

BTW, this is one of chief reason why I am not crazy about WiFi, and why need so powerful WiFi when living in small apartment or condo? There is no point of having powerful WiFi router in this scenario.

Answer is tablet, laptop, mobile, etc as sharing HD video. Size do not matter.

It's not my router. I saw it a few days ago, and I'm trying to remember. It might have been Ubee? I'll have to check next time I go over there. Depending on how things to today, maybe I can go over tonight.

Umm -- Im surprised no one mentioned this. Do you have a tablet or andriod/iphone? download wifi analyzer. start it away from friends router, and walk towards the router and watch which one has signal gets stronger. THATS the wifi name you want to try to hook to.

Ubee is usually a simple cable modem.

Also what happens when you hook directly to the router via ethernet wire? did you try accessing the router and see if you can log in via default passwords? No work? ok did you try calling the VRS tech support and see if they have the password for the router THEY installed? sometimes the installer will change passwords so they can prevent access but for themselves which is wrong and not allowed. If it a router your freind installed - a simple call to VRS support to get settings you need before resetting is all you need. Its a simple thing since I read your other posts that you are learning computers.

Dont worry too much about messing up the router settings if the person has a vp installed. You just need to call the VRS tech support and explain you need access and what at the settings that needs to be changed or setting for that particular vp. This way you can hard reset the router and setup a new password that YOU know and YOUR freind can write down and keep in a safe place. Its NOT supposed to be a secret - its NOT a big deal. I do this all the time when a freind dont know something- I just reset router and setup properly for the vp. easy.

I know the difference between secured and unsecured connections. :)

We decided to to stay with wired connection and not bother with the WiFi.

No iPad, iPhone, or android phones. (I still have a Blackberry. )

I think we'll stick with the wired connection to keep it simple. :)

:ty:

What about door-to-door neighbors to identify their networks to eliminate until you find your friend's WiFi network? Once you identified the network, try hack it for password. Just thoughts.

I don't think my friend wants us to contact the neighbors.

We'll stick with wired for now.
