How Polite Are We?

The less crowd the better the courtesy is.

I disagree. My example of how New York and L.A. are different.

Me walking down 5th Avenue in New York (a VERY busy street) at lunchtime, tons of people walking around...I don't get bumped into or jostled by a single one.

Me walking down Melrose in Los Angeles, not a single other person on the sidewalk except one guy walking towards me, and he manages to smash into me and then walk off without saying a word.

People who think New Yorkers are all rude selfish druggies have watched too many movies/too much TV. You can't make those claims about a place unless you've lived there; just visiting once doesn't count.

Sorry, I can't see the sense about rudest tourists... All what I see is one-sided, not both sided. I would prefer to hear the tourist's side what they think of hotels etc?

British holidaymakers have come a very close second to the Germans in a survey to find the rudest nation of tourists.

 No Wonder, that Germans and British are the most popular holiday makers to compare with other countries. I see no excuse to use the rates on Germans' and Britishs' mentality because not many tourists in different countries like Germans and British.

See this example what the British think of Americans, French, Germans, Israelis and Canadians...

1. Americans: Ignorant. Loud. Oblivious to surroundings. Insincere.

2. French: Rude. Bigoted. A trifle out of touch with reality.

3. Germans: Humorless. Rule-obsessed. Unfriendly. Stubborn.

4. Israelis: Rude. Cheap. Arrogant. Cliquish.

5. Canadians: Exactly like Americans, but more soft-spoken, more polite, less ignorant, and twenty times more boring.

The worst tourists in the world - Yahoo! News

Read further comments in this link. See what the British think of them... It's same with every people who judges people's culture menatity in different countries, they met.

As many as 22% of overseas hotel and catering staff thought the British were the rudest customers they had encountered, according to the survey by Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine.

I don't really think the British are bad tourists. I would say that most young people... YES. They like to binge drinking and booze... Oh Well... We met some British tourists in different countries... They are such friendly people...

Only the Germans came out worse, with 23% of 1,000 staff interviewed finding them the least bearable.

I need to listen tourists's side why they are not happy with staff? I need both sides, not one side. Should the tourists shut their mouths when they realized something that's not what they thought accord travel brochure description? I know that Germans are obsessed exact description, they received from Travel Agencies... They has the right to complaint if something miss in description... I know what I'm saying because I'm one of them... I do not consider it as rude when I have something to complaint but demand my rights. :dunno:... The Hotel should give Travel Agency correct description what they have in their hotel, rules, etc.

Many British tourists were described as "drunken, yobbish, and spitting", with frequent displays of "arrogance" and "ignorance" when on holiday abroad.

It was even alleged that Britons had a habit of demanding compensation for meals they had already eaten but claimed to not enjoy.

Some accused the Brits of insulting staff and spitting at them, while one waiter claimed to have been threatened with a gun by an unhappy customer.

The magazine's editor, Forbes Mutch, said: "I think these survey results will come as a surprise to many people. This just goes to show that we Brits have a thing or two to learn when it comes to table manners."

I can see the image from the article that young people who come from World Cup... You know that they are football (scoocer) crazier and fight which is bad.
BBC NEWS | UK | British 'world's worst tourists'

Like I say before, it's not all tourists in different countries - some is bad, some is good.

The survey also carried the claim that Germans always found something to complain about no matter how high the standard of service.

I find interesting the people considered Germans as rude people for complaint against Hotel etc... It could be that I'm one of them who also complaint as well... Like what I said in above "I need to listen tourists's side why they are not happy with staff? I need both sides, not one side."

Let me share few examples of my side what I had an experience with hotel...
We followed and agreed with the description of Hotel in Travel Agency brochure and then question Travel Agency Office before paid the book. It written in brochure that they have indoor playground in the hotel for the children to play. Our arrival at hotel and found that it's not exact description what we expected - there're no indoor playground and confronted the receptionist. She denied our complaint and suggested that we should discuss things with Travel Agency. AFter our vacation over, we check with Travel Agency... They take care everything until they have proof to against Hotel then we got 20% discount refund from Hotel for give wrong discription in Travel Brochure.

Another example: We booked luxury Hotel in London to celebrate our 2nd wedding Anniversary for the weekends in 1987. "Breakfast buffet" written in Travel brochure. Our arrival, found wonderful buffet... It written in the board that if we want to have English breakfast then inform waiter... We did. When the weekends is over, we got bill from receptionist saying that we should pay 18 pounds for 4 English breakfasts. I was like Huh? and check brochure again but it didn't written which buffet they offer us... They should write "Continental breakfast buffet including English Breakfast" or Continental breakfast"... but just that "Breakfast Buffet". Of course we reject to pay the bill and explain Receptionist the reason... They check and have to give us right and forget the bill... I told them to add "continental breakfast" if English breakfast is not including next time. It's not just 2 examples but few more...

Am I considered to be rude to "complaint" toward Hotel? I do not see that I'm rude to complaint Hotel... :dunno: It's interesting that people from other cultures do see it as rude...

Each people have different menatiliy behavior but we really have no problem to deal with them... because we read to learn about their culture and customs before we arrive. Respect their rules to einjoy ourselves. Learn their few languages... that's why I really have no problem with people from other countries, not like what the people in article, you provided. Perhaps their problem is ignorant and uneducation... :dunno:

One hotelier working in the Caribbean reported a German customer taking service staff to task for refusing to massage suntan oil into her back.

It didn't say ALL... but just one German... :dunno:

To my opinion, the people from every countries are the same when they are not tourists. Some of them are rude, some not.

After the Germans and the British, the Americans and French were considered the next rudest nations, each with 18% of the votes, followed by the Italians with 17%.

Story from BBC NEWS

Each people themselves who judges other people's mentality from other countries and share what they think... To me, what they did is ignorant and uneducation. It's their problem for show no respect on their mentality behavior....

The link, I provide in my first thread is general over well-being and polite etc... I disagree with those link about Sinpagorans because I withnessed their behavior. I also disagree that Berlin is 4th place, too... but I accept that it's people themselves who judges every different cultures where they visit to and share their view.

British 'world's worst tourists'

The British scored poorly in the survey

Britons have been labelled the world's worst holidaymakers in a survey of tourist boards around the globe.
Research by online travel service Expedia suggests Brits abroad are the least well-regarded by foreigners.

They are the rudest, meanest, worst-behaved, most linguistically incompetent and least adventurous holidaymakers, the study published on Friday claims.

But the Germans are generally welcomed and topped the poll of tourist offices in 17 countries worldwide.

Top tourists
1st Germans
2nd Americans
3rd Japanese
4th Italians
5th = French, Norwegians, Swedes

Categories included behaviour, politeness, willingness to learn the language, trying local delicacies and spending on the local economy.

And overall, the British finished bottom of the league table of 24 nations, which was topped by the Germans, Americans and Japanese.

Germans were the best-behaved and the British, Irish and Danish the worst.

The behaviour of British tourists was recently in the spotlight when 13 were arrested on the Greek island of Faliraki, in a police crackdown on lewd behaviour.

Language barrier

Simon Calder, travel editor of The Independent newspaper, told Radio 4's Today programme: "We put little value on learning languages and the British consequently are guilty of terrible cultural and linguistic arrogance.

He added: "All over Europe, the bartenders and waiters at the resorts are steeling themselves for another miserable summer when the British invasion begins in earnest."

Americans were judged the most courteous and the British the rudest, alongside the Russians and Canadians.

Worst tourists
17th = Argentines, New Zealanders, Czechs, Finns
21st Indians
22nd = Irish, Israelis
24th British

The Brits also seemed to make least effort in speaking the local language, a quality excelled by the Germans, French and Americans.

Keith Betton, of the Association of British Travel Agents, said it was more difficult to speak foreign languages abroad because most other nations speak English.

He told BBC Breakfast: "I think we're changing. Travellers are now more adventurous and like to go places on the map that no-one's ever heard of."

The Italians, Spanish and Germans are most likely to try local food, but the Britons, Indians and burger-loving Americans are more likely to shy away from native delicacies.

When it comes to other things like doing the Conga at two in the morning, the British are champions of the world

David Glover

But the Germans did not perform well in the spending and tipping stakes and were described as the meanest nation - closely followed by the British.

The big spenders were the Americans, then the Japanese and Russians.

Dermot Halpin, managing director of Expedia.co.uk, said: "A little effort goes a long way in a foreign country, and as much as it pains me to say it, perhaps the Germans actually deserve to get the best sunbeds."

But David Glover, producer of the Channel 4 programme The Tourist Trap, said the British had more fun than the Germans.

He told Today: "When it comes to other things like doing the Conga at two in the morning, the British are champions of the world."

Now you see that different article written against each other what they judges every culture's behavior....

That's why I said that some rude and some not in every countries in the world.

Hi Liebling, that is interesting for me. I will write you later. I am going to Berlin today. okay!!! Have a great weekend:hug: *wave hands*

People who think New Yorkers are all rude selfish druggies have watched too many movies/too much TV. You can't make those claims about a place unless you've lived there; just visiting once doesn't count.

Very true...

I don't live in Berlin and only claim what I know from medias, TV etc about druggies, etc.... I think Sunladyshine will answer better than me because she born and raise in Berlin before move to live in Bavaria at years ago.

I think I have to agree with the report about Germans being arrogant tourists. I myself am of German ancestry, and my friends always tell me that I am silly for pointing things out that they could care less about. Once I read that the advertisement for a hotel claimed that each room has a coffeemaker, so I complained to the front desk that there was no coffeemaker in our room. I think Germans make too much of a great deal out of details and will observe the room or the premises to see whether if it was actually what they had expected.

Point in case: during the Deaflympics, the German team arrived at the hotel, and found five things to complain about. They could not have all the rooms together for the athletes and did not want to move around next day to be together. Second thing they complained was that there was no breakfast included in the first day (Deaflympics only provided for breakfast from 1st to 10th February, not 31st January). Eventually the hotel gave in and allowed them to have breakfasts. Third thing: the hotel would not give the money back to the German team for the cancelled rooms and still refused to. Fourth: The hockey practise schedule was changed for German team and they were expected to practise at 11 in the morning, which they protested because they arrived late in the night, around 1 in the morning and wanted to sleep in a bit, have breakfast before going to hockey. The Deaflympics changed schedule back to the original schedule (2.30 pm) for them.

I had better fun with the Athletes than with the coaches and interpreters. One interpreter I disliked very much, she always had a very sour look on her face. Ugh! But the athletes and one coach were so much fun!

I try to remember sometimes to not to make big deals about things when I go travelling. It was a huge lesson for me to learn when I was working during the Deaflympics, and I had to try and be patient while the athletes were talking with hotel or airport. Now I should have to try to be a much better tourist and to ask in a nicer way sometimes. :)

I think I have to agree with the report about Germans being arrogant tourists.

This is your opinion. I have people who tell me negative about American's mentality but I choose to ignore it. I have meet Americans here in work place. I respect what they are as the same they respect what we are, that's why we get on well with no problem. If the people who can't accept then is their ignorant and uneducation.

I myself am of German ancestry, and my friends always tell me that I am silly for pointing things out that they could care less about.

It's sad that they can't accept what you are. They are no friends.

To me, the exact description in Travel Brochure should be expected because we paid for it. It's German's mentality - of course I'm one of them... Of course we are arrogant people as what you just label because I belong to who demand the rights. I don't care what everyone think but I have no problem with anyone who accept what I am.. If I see something missing then remind Receptionist in friendly way... It's important to Germans that the Receptionist show their respect on their guests and then is solved with no complication... It's bad if they denied it or show no respect in manner way.

Point in case: during the Deaflympics, the German team arrived at the hotel, and found five things to complain about. You know I take only both sides... I got your side then I will hear German's side as well then I will see...

If anyone who want to go other countries then have to study and show their respect on their culture, mentality and customs etc... If they don't like or complaint then don't go but the description of Hotel is a different story because it must be follow exactly.

Yes, that's true. Depending on where you're from is different than visiting in the cities. I've been to Boston several times but never been to NY or LA. You'll never know what is like in the city you never been into. Some say it's bad and other says it's great.

Sorry, I can't see the sense about rudest tourists....
You don't need to defend German tourists to me. I just posted examples of the variety of surveys about peoples' politeness/rudeness to show how the results differ depending on which group takes the survey. The point was, you can't fully trust survey results.

Sorry if that survey touched a raw nerve.

No, I'm not defend German or any tourists from other country but facts. I'm really glad that you provided the link. All what I see the article, you provided is only one-sided is from staff/hotel. I only said where's tourist's side. I rather to have both sided. It's me.

I already said cons and pros in my posts and aware that the Germans are very obsessed to any rules and follow exact description. I find sad that people judge their mentality... I has to defend Germans because I know their mentality. I travel to different countries and accept their different mentality without say negative about them. I can agree to disagree their cultures sometimes.

All what I want to say is thank you for provide the link then I aware what the people who judge, really are. It's interesting to me to know what kind of judgement they made toward the people from other countries.

I confess that I've never lived in NYC, only visited (mostly Broadway theaters and the old Madison Square Garden) and driven thru several times (my family lives in CT). I loved being on foot in NYC. I hated driving in NYC traffic. Just that change in perspective makes a huge difference.

Anyone who has a negative feeling about New Yorkers should recall how that city's people responded on 9/11. NYC clearly showed its heart that day, and following.

Sure, it has its "seedy" underbelly and low lifes; every large city does. It also has the most colorful, lively (dare I say, "diverse") community in the USA. :D

Has anyone met the people from Texas? I thought Texans are nice people including me. I walked down in 6th Street and near campus of University of Texas at Austin, Texas. The people were really nice. Smiling and sometimes said, "what's up" or "hello." I asked some people for the direction. If they don't know, they goes, "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't know where is this." If they knows, "Oh, yes, just go to right and walk for 3 blocks and you're there." with the smile. I'm assuming Texans are nicest people in the country. That's my opinion.

Sunshine and Leibling, how's Bavaria? I heard it is beautiful there, mainly, Tea House or Eagle's Nest's view. So, I'm interesting to go to Germany someday. I hope Germans treating Americans with respect 'cause we, Americans, kicked their butts twice. No offense. hehe....I thought it's funny for us. No offense.

Has anyone met the people from Texas?

Here is my answer to your question:

Accord my friends, they went there on their vacation. One of my friends have a cousin who married Texan and live there for years. They paid their surprised visit to see them... Guess what, cousin´s husband tried to SHOT them for "break in their property"... :eek3: His cousin saw and know who he is and stop her hubby for tried to shot again... It scared my friends when they withnessed him to shot with large gun... His cousin told my friends.. .Next time, please let them know when and what´s time they come to visit... because Texans don´t like surprised visitors... They are very paraniod people... You as Texan, what do you think of this? I remember that my friend mentioned that Texans are friendly people but it bothers them when they see them carried their guns everywhere.

Yes I do beleive you... Like what I said before that some people in the world are friendly people and some not. It depends on their behavior due their family background that´s how expose the people like this.

I´m a patience and friendly person. If I see something missing then remind them in friendly way then they would be glad to have their respect in return... If you made harsh manner and rude behavior toward them then the people would do the same in return... some people are patience and ignore their rude behavior.

Oh yes, Bavaria is a beautiful country. It´s not just tea house but coffee house as well and see plenty of mountains..., forest... wild animals around. I have seen eagles everywhere in my area...

 No, I´m not offense... but laugh... I´m glad that you and ADers show us what you think of German´s behavior. I has to post agree or disagree because I know German´s mentality well and explain why they act like this.

As long as you show your respect then they will be happy to show their respect in return. Like what I said that it´s not all people who acts rude and arogrant... It would be nice if you learn some of German´s language to show your respect on German culture. A lot of Germans like Americans who tries German languages when they communicate with them... Americans like Germans who tries English language. Most Germans can speak English. It depends on menatilty between Americans and Germans... As long as you show your respect in manner behavior then it will be okay. Most Germans keep themselves and not much talk - they could be talk a lot if you know them better.

Oh yes, Bavaria is a beautiful country. It´s not just tea house but coffee house as well and see plenty of mountains..., forest... wild animals around. I have seen eagles everywhere in my area...
I believe Texas Guy is referring to this:

Obersalzberg

Kehlsteinhaus ("Eagle's Nest")

Without a doubt, the most popular tourist site on the Obersalzberg now is the Kehlsteinhaus. In English, this building is called the "Eagle's Nest," even though this is not a translation of the German name (simply "House on the Kehlstein (Mountain)"), and the Germans did not call it the "Eagle's Nest" (or Adlerhorst or any other such name). This name seems to have been first applied by the visiting French ambassador André François Poncet, and was picked up by the Allies. It was in use by the Americans and British by 1938.

This is also often called "Hitler's Tea House," but that is a misnomer. Although Reichsleiter Martin Bormann was inspired to build the Kehlsteinhaus by Hitler's obvious fancy for the Teehaus on the Mooslahnerkopf, Hitler did not use the Kehlsteinhaus as an intimate tea house, nor did he visit it regularly. Hitler used the Kehlsteinhaus only to show off to visiting dignitaries, and he probably did not visit it himself more than twenty times, as he did not like the height and the perceived dangers of lightning and the elevator. Bormann himself and Eva Braun did far more entertaining in the Kehlsteinhaus than did Hitler.
Kehlsteinhaus

I believe Texas Guy is referring to this:

Kehlsteinhaus

Oooohhhhh I got it....

Thank you for correct me...

I didn't know that Americans call Hilter's house as "Eagle's Nest"... Accord British & Americans, they often call Hilter's house as Hilter's Kehlsteinhaus or Hilter's Tea House... or mention for go to Obersalzberg, then we will know what they talk about is visit Hilter's house because Obersalzberg is well-known for visit Hilter's house.

I didn't know that Americans mean "Eagle's Nest" is Hilter's Kehlsteinhaus until Texan Guy mentioned for a first time...

Yes we stay hotel in Königssee for a week in 1998 and visit Hitler's Kehlsteinhaus. Very interesting... (Königssee is not far from Hilter's Kehlsteinhaus). Very beautiful view. We would like to go there again some day but prefer stay in Königssee over Obersalzberg. Obersalzberg is also beautiful area for visit.
