how old were you driving first time?

Hmm... seems like the average age to start driving was 19 years old.

For those of you who didn't get a permit until later, why was that?

I got mine at age 15 because that was the age people were allowed to get their permit. There wasn't anything holding me until later to get it.

Learn permit > 15
License> 16 :D

also Mom give me a car as early graduate when i was 11 grade high school :D

I waited because I wanted to till I am ready. Till I realized it is best for me to learn to drive because sometimes I wanted to go up to lake or go out of town, best is drive by car. :) I am glad I did! :) My brother is 34 and he don't drive AT ALL! He never wanted to!

I got my permit at 15 1/2 years old and had the driver's license at 16.

Prior to that, I've been driving at a young age because it was in a rural area. I started on it when I was around 10 or 11 years old driving 1 ton trucks to help the farmers bail hays, tractors and even the combine on my uncle's farm.

Same as my grandmother who recently deceased, she never drive all her life either so my grandfather does all the driving :)

^^ Yeah, my grandma also never drove in her whole life either. She's now deceased at least 10 years ago.

I didn't get a license sooner because I didn't have a car available to drive. I had to buy a car first so that I could learn how to drive. :)

The first time I drove the car when I was 7 years old. I took my mother's key to 1967 metallic green Ford Mustang convertible. I backed out of the car carefully and drove around the block without stopping then pulled into the garage carefully. My mom didn't even knew what I did. I love Mustang's G-force when I turned around corners. I think I drove about 35 to 40mph.. (remmy that I was small boy tho)

At 12 yr old, My brother let me drive on parking lot for practice with 72' VW Bug.

At 15 yr old, My brother let me drive 100 miles on highway on 1979 Ford Pinto Super Sport (drove 120mph for short time).

After geting learner permit at 15, My mom let me drive my dad's 1981 Ford LTD. I smoked tires and she laughed at me.

16 yr old, got my first driver's license. I drove 72' VW Bug solo and drove wrong way on divided 6 lane road (not highway, it's a Parkway) while going to Plaza in KC MO. LOL. I pulled over instantly as soon as I saw 3 cars heading in front of me. I made a U turn and went home. :eek2: .

Yes, my parents-in-law also never drove in their whole life, too. We or their friends drove them to everywhere that's time my mother-in-law was alive.

My both sisters never drove in their life, too because there're plenty of transportation in London that's why they do not need car and no need to pay driving school expenses, says they.

My mother, Aunt and 2 grandmothers never drove at all and I vowed that I wouldn't be like them relying on everybody else to do the driving. In those days, it was the norm for mothers and grandmothers not to drive.

I gave up after 7 driving lessons in London, when I was 17 due finance problem that's time I got a new apartment... It's hardly to cope with driving school expense and rent a new apartment on the same time... I decided to quit until my finance does improve... but I never thought about live in Germany when I met and married to a German.

After live in Germany in 1985, I decide to not need a car because my hubby can drive everywhere with me... and I can get a bus to work during bad weather and ride a bicycle to work during good weather until happened in 1991... The rumor goes for years to move caserne where we work to other caserne which is long way... bad bus connection... so I applied for driving lesson... They gave me driving theory book then I have to take driving theory examination. It took me year to study on driving theory... until the official in 1992 that we have to move from the caserne where we work to other caserne in 8 months time... It's great because I already studied on driving theory one year before... then I am able to take driving lesson... I applied for driving school for the Deaf, that's time I was 3 months pregnant with first child. I stayed at pension and go to driving school for the Deaf for 4 whole weeks... until I passed both driving theory examination and driving test then finally got my first driving liescne when I was 29 years old and 3 months pregnant... After pass both driving theory and driving test, I bought a car from my boss's daughter for a good price...

Unfortunlately, the caserne where we work will move to other caserne this year which is near my home... which mean that I do not need a car... It takes me 15 to 20 minutes to ride a bicycle to work during good weather... If bad weather, then use a car... only 5 to 7 minutes drive...

well, i got late at 20 for first time driver license. my sister got her license at 16. she drove to school 5 days then hang out with girls for fun. lucky her!. i did joyride one time with my old best friend when i was 17, we went to club dance. i know, my bad but it was fun experienced.

anyway, one deaf person who never got license, always take a bus or train for 15 yrs now. cuz afraid of driving.

 Yea, I know other countries drive on left lane. My ex-roomate was an chubby Irish guy. He used come to USA for college. Sometime when I was in my driver's seat and waiting for him. He walked up to my driver side and opened the door and about to sit on me. He quickly realized it's not european car so he shut the door and walked around and got in passenger side. Other day, I rode with him (he owned ford feista), he drove on wrong side (didn't tell him that) and he saw car coming on his lane from distance and he quickly switched to right lane. He made me laugh every time.

Read the topic title again. Don't said anything about permit and driver license.

People who first time to drive can be 13 years or young old because farm and there is no law, only for road.

I believe every teenage have right to learn drive at age 16. That way, they can learn better and less accident and less stupid. If drive at late age, the lack experience they get.

I had permit when I was 15 then got actual license when I turn 16.

Ummm 2...laughin' I got my DL at 16, my dad taughted me how to drive when I was a kid, don't know how old.
