How many of you have to......

I slipped and fell flat on my back. That was when I was 33. It would have been scary if I was 60.

I had a client that was walking very fast on a sidewalk and he fell and became paralyzed from the neck down. He was in in his 70's and there was no ice on the ground. The guy when from being a strong tall man to paralyzed in one second. It was very sad. I am 67 and I very worried about falling on ice at night and no one seeing it happen.

What worries me the most is the ice making me fall and shredding my knee. That's my biggest concern, as when the doctors took the MRI of my knee 9 years ago, they said that during the winter, I was at a 75% risk of re-injury to that knee, and it's already happened once, and I cannot afford to completely tear out my knee again-- the process would take far too long today than it did back then, because of the number of times I've injured it and dealt with inflammation in it (I had inflammation twice, and it hurts like #@!$)

Topic of falling down reminds me of this. He fell down alright. Ouch.

You need to move to a non-icy climate.

I'd love to, but I have lived in IL since the day I came into this world, and wouldn't change it for anything else. IL is a great state (minus the corruption and high taxes, that is), and Chicago is a great city, and I have learned to adapt, so I'll be all right. Plus, I think my parents would prefer that I'm a few hours away instead of somewhere warmer, because they are likely going to need me in a few years.

Your parents can move South, too. :)

My Hubby was born in Michigan and lived there until he was 18. He eventually settled down South and would never move back to MI.

We have lots of former midwesterners in SC. They don't miss the ice. :giggle:

That'd be nice, but one problem (Times 2)-- both have a job, and both are in their 50's, and both have also lived in IL all their lives, just like I have. My Dad is a semi-truck driver, and my stepmom is a manager at a pig farm in Louisville, IL. She deals with piglets on a daily basis. I highly doubt they'd just want to up and move, and leave everyone and everything they've known behind. Kinda hard to start somewhere new, especially with what they do.

Maybe after they retire.

Since you said they might need you in a few years I thought they were older.

Oh, they will. I can see it. They both aren't getting younger, and both do have some kind of aliment that they are taking care of, but I have a feeling that they're gonna need me before they hit 55. I just hope I'm around if that happens.

I sympathize completely. I was born here in the land of ice and snow. The place I live now commonly drops below 20 below zero during Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, March. October and April are windup and windown and May is anybody's guess but it is warmer. I am not there right now I am down in what we call the banana belt it is only 12 below zero here today.
I use a big weedburner torch with a line to a 25lb. propane bottle to remove the ice from my steps. That works the best. Gives me the industrial drama I enjoy.

Falling down is a terrible danger. I have observed over my life that some people are fallers.
It can happen to anybody but a faller will fall more than the rest. It is something about how they process information and move. I used to think they do not value not falling as much as others.
Then I theorized about the psychology of attention combined with horrible pain and how it becomes a pattern. Then I decided I think too much about things I cannot do anything about. If you are a faller be extra careful. If you are not a faller be extra careful too. I hope everyone has a nice holiday!!

Never happened here.... when I lived in Texas and one winter had a arctic blast that brought down single digit temperature in Houston area and had snow. My driveway had ice and almost slipped on that.

Black Ice is not fun to deal with that can cause injuries and accidents.

Ice storm in Toronto, had to deal with it for the last few days. Now in Niagara for a few days with my parents, not as bad here.

(woo, 1000th post!)

They did a good job photoshopping the top picture to make it look like the cat jumped out of the shuttle/airplane? Real nice!

The bottom one of the cat trying to jump onto the ledge is the original one.

That's a space shuttle. The only thing that has an opening like that.

Ever since I moved to West Coast I don't have to deal with it that much, whew.

if you run out of commercial salt - kitchen salt will do. sand will do, regular soil will do.
just about anything to cause friction.

Fuzzy

We have enough to last until at least the end of January. Think we're okay for now.
