I was told you can do a love-R bird-L.
What is that and how do you do it? Thanks :)

Can you explain what this combination of signs possibly means? If it is a gutter sign, I'm not interested. Are you an ASL user?

I'm trying to say "love is a bird" and i was told i could sign it as "Love-R+Bird-L+same"

Seems kind of teethering between an idiom but not quite there. Not sure about how it would go myself. I have seen this expression used as the name of a song.
I'm not sure if you've been told this.. but some deaf, especially the Deafened have trouble comprehending idioms ("shake a leg", "raining cats and dogs") etc.
You could get away with signing it to hearing or those with their roots in hearing culture, but not as likely to a true deaf.

Tousi, what is a gutter sign? Can you give me an example?

I don't have a specific example. You know how it is with some people; they have no genuine interest in learning signs except for the vulgar ones. But I see this is not the case here.

Hey, I'd like to know the love+bird sign too! My daughter's favorite song, one that has to be played on the ipod EVERY car trip -- along with Julie Andrews' Do Re Mi and Dragostea din Tei by O-Zone (the Numa Numa song that went crazy viral on YT years ago) -- has a title that's translated as "love is a rebellious bird" (L’amour est un oiseau rebelle, from Carmen): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lspRhX5Vhhg]YouTube - Maria Callas - L'amour est un oiseau rebelle - Habanera - Carmen - Bizet[/ame]

But, ah, if it's an off-color phrase, I'd rather not teach a 4YO that sign :) .

But the song does start with a very interesting comment about preferring one man who doesn't speak at all over one who speaks well, by the way.

L’amour est un oiseau rebelle que nul ne peut apprivoiser,
Et c’est bien in vain qu’on l’appelle s’il lui convient de refuser.
Rien n’y fait, menace ou prière.
L’un parle bien, l’autre se tait. Et c’est l’autre que je préfère.
Il n’a rien dit mais il me plait.

L’amour! L’amour! L’amour! L’amour!

...

You messing with me, Grendel?

I'm still not getting how you are doing these signs.

Are you using R-handshape while signing LOVE?

Are you using L-handshape while signing BIRD?

And then you sign SAME-AS?

Is that what you mean?

Unless that's a play on signs, if you want to convey the poetic meaning that love can be like a bird I would stay away from initializing. In signing poetry, unless it's specifically an A-B-C poem, the fewer initials and spelling used, the better.

Was also confused what was meant by Love-R Bird-L but I think this is what he means.

At the same time, simultaneously:
sign "LOVE" on right hand
sign "BIRD" on left hand

After that, then sign "SAME"

OIC

At least I learned something. I never knew there was any precedent for love being compared to a bird before.

:eek3: was a little worried when I first saw you on the forum :)

= my sweet black lab's name [married a medieval & renaissance expert, hence the affection for a monster] and my blog's name, not planning any raids...so please don't take my arm off

Lol, sorry for causing you concern. Sometimes my wild and wacky side gets the better of me. ;)

Same here. Sounds flighty to me. :giggle:

Yeah I think the more ASL is reaching out to the hearing, the more likely there is unintended consequences. It is just how it is. :|

Hey, well, at least we get to see Beowulf meet his nemesis in here. I need to grab a bucket of popcorn.

Whoa! I just found out there's a movie called Beowulf & Grendel; but it wasn't released to the US. Must. check. out.
Their story goes further back then the movies. :giggle:

not to burst the OP's bubble - but I don't think that anyone would be likely to connect LOVE & BIRD signed at the same time as "LOVE BIRD" meaning sweethearts ...

IF one was to sign the gloss for LOVE BIRDS in a way that it would be at all understood they'd either sign "LOVE" (not the ILY sign) then "BIRD" - then perhaps "LOVE" again...

The alternate that is more common, and much more "understandable" would be signing "SWEET-HEART" ("A" hands palms together -placed over heart - and the thumbs repeatedly bending&straightening etc)

It's important to keep in mind (especially for those not fluent in ASL or other Sign languages) just because one "can" do something (ie it's technically possible) doesn't necessarily means the "should"
