How do you order drinks at a Coffee Shop like Starbucks?

Chances that you get a deaf customer who can not speak at all is pretty small. IMO

Most of us just want to be treated like any other customer.

No, there are millions of people who are Deaf and can't speak well like me. They go to Starbucks frequently for social events all over America.

I am deaf, and speak quite well. However, the problem is the level of hearing I have today. It's no longer realistic to rely on speaking and hearing alone; I also have to visualize and be observant, as well. These things help me do things better.

I usually go prepared ahead of time with what I want written down before I even approach the service counter to place my order. If it is a new place where I don't know the menu, i will stand back and make my decision, write it down then approach the counter. I still like the laminated picture menu the best though. Since I have lived in Asia for half my life, I know it to be a success in breaking down the language barrier, even spoken language barriers.

here in germany there is starbucks as well,
before i go to barista i make decision, just like beclak said..
since i know what barista would ask at the first, i will answer in right order- name - size - adding - my name ! it´s only works if i visit starbuck more than once
last time i was very confus because i was nort prepared....new method like asking my name :D sooo embarrassing!

Too bad they don't number their selections like some Asian restaurants do. It would be easy to either write down a number or hold up the number of fingers.
Fast food restaurants such as Jack-in-the-Box, Burger King, Del Taco, etc do have numbers on their menu. McDonald's also number their menu but not on their coffee list.

It makes things easier for me but if I don't want onions, mayo or pickles, I have to write it down anyway.

Arby's used to have self-service orders through computers in front of customers at the counter. Perfect for deaf customers but hearing customers complained about it and prefer full service orders so no more self-service. I bet some of you remember that one.

I used my cell phone and type what I want to order for coffee. Its been no problem so far.

That sounds cool about Arby's self-service orders! I never saw that. I've gone to Arbys for 20 years and never saw that at my local Arbys or any of the Arby's I traveled to. I would have loved that feature.

I attend Starbucks Deaf Social every other Friday night. I can never hear or understand what the barista is saying. For the people who drink a lot of Starbucks, maybe you can print out little cards on your computer with your name, size of drink and how you want it. Then the barista can tape that to your cup for your order to be made. Just another idea and just might save some time.

Interesting. I've never seen that at Arby's.

They have self ordering at most of our Applebee's around here. I haven't used it so not sure how great it works. If you pay some money your kids can play games on it which I don't particularly like.

Maybe it's a local thing? We don't have that here.

Is it just for take out orders? If not, I wonder how that works for up-selling?

There on every table, about the size of a mini IPad. Next time I go I will take a picture and see what else it can do. I think I heard my daughter say that you could check on your order and order drinks. No clue about up-selling???

I have seen that here at Chili's, and think it is supposed to be in quite a few of those type restaurants soon. And it isn't for takeout.

I guess it just hasn't made it's way to this area yet. At least when I ate there in November.
