How do you feel if your newborn baby is deaf?

I was born deaf in my genetic family. I have only 2 cousins deaf. I never meet my mom's cousin was deaf. I have 1 cousin boy.

If my baby's born deaf. I will not let my baby go to Deaf School. Like my old deaf school done to me in past. I will teach my baby to learn how to sign language. If my baby birth to deaf or hoh. I will take my child go to mainstream school. There is the best education than Deaf School's stink education.

:lol: Very true, very true! I was raised in mainstream myself, too. The education was great! :D

You have to remember not all deaf schools are alike. It all depend on good teachers who have the passions to teach kids. Not all are good. Some are wonderful. Some are lousy. Depend on their knowledge in their area of expert.

Look at me? I went to Ark. School for the Deaf. The education there was wonderful. Really we were a challenge to them as they kept having to look for more stuffs to teach us. By the time we graduated- we were already at college level. I don't mean to brag about it but to give you an idea. They said lot of deaf kids who graduated from high school leave with 4th grade level reading and language skills.

I think it depend on parents who put their kids in early intervention therapy like my mom put me in one when i was 2 years old. I noticed lot of kids who were put in therapy at early age did good? I noticed lot of parents don't put the deaf kids till they started Kindergarten. So there is the problem. I believe the parents should have put the kids in therapy at early age to improve their lanugage skills. Like hearing parents put their hearing kids in Head Start program. So why not for deaf kids at early age? Not many parents know this till too late. That is sad.

That is why I believe kids should be put in at early age to keep up with their age level and not fall behind. :)

Second that too, I too was mainstreamed and have better education levels and passed with ease. Ofc I had interpreters in class as well which helps ;)
 
My Mom loves us so much but do disappoint us as deaf! ..... Now I have two hearing health girls that make me relieve! :)

My god few of comments said "I'll be so happy if child's deaf but if hearing that's ok...." that's sickening, you are actually disappointed that your child is hearing?!

For me if my child's deaf and healthy Ill be happy and I'll give him/her best help possible and possibility get implanted with CI when old enough to have clear result of hearing loss and mainstream her/him in best local private school with service if needed.

If its born hearing I'll be happy and place her/him in best local private school.

Some mainstream school aren't good service for deaf people, it has been happen to me, even your deaf child would have very difficult time with hearing people in some mainstream school.

I was graduated from high school that has mediocre education with high percent of minorities.
 
if my baby birth deaf, we will be happy have a deaf baby cuz of we dont care if hearing or deaf.. there is important healthy baby.. :)

Why ? You should not be upset at all. My parents loved me just the way I was and now. I have family and relatives that signs with me and sometimes talk as i can do lipread. I was attended Maryland School for the Deaf for 7 years and I love it! I wish I go back to school there because that's what the deaf culture are. I have no problem with the both world- hearing and deaf. JUst accept who your child are and you will learn more later in life and see how wonderful . Deaf people can make it through in life just like hearing people in daily life. Don't worry what the future holds for them. Just like me .. here I am today. :)As always I still am and have been a happier deaf person!Be acceptable in His sight that God created them and designed them of who they are .

Did you graduate from Deaf School? I did! Deaf School's level aren't same as Mainstream. Some of mainstream school do have an interpereter and have asl class available.
 
I was raise to mainstream school before. I graduated from Deaf School. I didn't really like it. It's long story.

You know some mainstream school do have interpreter and ASL class available???

I don't want my deaf child to live in the dorm at deaf school. That's my decide for my child go to mainstream and private school. Please respect my decide. :ty:

All mainstream school are required to offers interpreter by law but some interpreters are really lousy.

I'm not here to encourage your child to attend deaf school, I just let you know about not all mainstream school are good, just aware of it.

That's true! Some interpreter use ASL fluent. Some don't. Some interpreter use SEE sign. I have an idea for all ASL interpreter available at mainstream school instead of lousy. I don't know if my baby will be deaf or not. I have to wait and see when I get pregnant. I will know. I don't have a kids yet.

Yep, A public schools and deaf schools are two big different on how they teach educations levels. I been to public school and deaf school, But I prefer the public mainstream because the educations level is great and much different then a deaf schools that teach only basic things like baby steps. It denpend on what deaf school you attended. I didn't like the deaf school much because of the educations was way too easy to pass. That probably why I graduated so early. I had my good times and bad times at that school. But public I am more satifised there. The most important thing is there is alway interpreters at hearing school that makes it worth while.
 
I wouldn't care. I would accept my child for who he/she was.

I'm deaf myself, so I would consider that a huge advantage towards ensuring that my deaf child doesn't go through the hardships that I went to.

For instance, I knew nothing about VR support... ADA... financial aid... etc. No one told me these things. Now that I know about these things, I'll make sure that my kid knows about it. :)
 
Exactly, How I feeling. I wish I would graduate from mainstream school in first place. I was screw up my life during teen life. I was rebellion at deaf school. You're lucky for Mainstream school graduated. I didn't. :( I do forgave to everyone what they done to me in past.
