How did you meet your best friend/confidant?

Been burned many times by telling a "best friend" something in confidence...then later on to find others know about it....My closest sister was one....really put up a wall between us ever since....She keeps "probing" :giggle:...and I keep making up stories for her to "spread gossip about"....:laugh2:...She accused me of believing that everyone was conspiring about me....

Anyhow...my doggie is my best friend, my confidant...my sweetheart and I trust her 150%....Some things are better left unsaid...taking it to the grave, in better words I'm guessing..

Pets are very good at keeping secrets you tell them.

At college in the ASL program a year and a half ago. We don't get to hang out as often as we'd like to but are only ever a text away :D

Well, as a kid I had met someone often practically everywhere. Because of military life involving constant relocating, these friendships didn't last long and soon someone else comes along whom I end up spending more time with. But as an adult? It's been fun, but there is far too much drama to trust anyone personally, I respect them but will only consider them as a good acquaintance. My true bff and confidant will always be my sister always. :)

I wish I had a sibling to confide in, but unfortunately, my younger brother betrayed my Dad, and dishonored the family name, and even though they want to talk to him again, he wants nothing to do with them, and I want nothing to do with him until he resolves any issues with my Dad and stepmom. Sad, I know, but he should not have dishonored the family name the way he did.

Dishonored the family name???

My best friend and I lost touch after I moved from NH to SC, more so after I lost too much hearing to talk on the phone. We still chat through text every now, just different now. I met her at work.

But my sisters will always be real besties.

Yes. He dishonored the family name so badly he nearly gave my Dad a heart attack. What did he do? He changed his last name from my Dad's side of the family to my Mom's side, and in our eyes, that's called dishonoring the family name, because my last name has been around a very long time, especially in the area my stepmom and Dad live in now. A person doesn't just change their last name in my family without getting some kind of backlash from it. Also, my Dad disowned him, as well.

There's got to be more to the story; did your dad disown him because of the son changing his last name or something else? People don't just change their last name for the heck of it.

The only thing I know is that he and my Dad had a very terrible argument in 2006; things weren't the same between them since then, and then my younger brother decided to quit being a member of my family for good, which is when he changed his last name to his current last name, and several of my family members said that was dishonorable.

Right. If he's changing his name I'd imagine it would have more to do with something the dad did, but whatever, I couldn't possibly care any less. I'm just laughing at the phrase, dishonored the family name, so antiquated. Who says that? Should probably throw himself on a sword or something now :D

:laugh2::laugh2: You said it not me, I was about to post some funny pictures of a ninja saying, "You have dishonored my family, now die!" but I just know I'd get in trouble for that.

I think I have impulse control problems.

Nah I suffer from I don't give a ****itis.

dishonor the family name? must commit seppuku.

Pfft.

So.. all these women (and some men!) who marry are dishonoring their birth family by taking the spouse name? Who knew.

Whatever the reason, must have been a darn good one but I don't see how that's dishonoring the name. Now if he took a name that was totally unrelated to either his mother OR father-- THEN I'd say he was being disrespectful to his family but even then it's still his choice. I've known a few people to have completely changed their name from their birth name including last name to get away from their family roots.

how quaint though... "dishonoring the family name" and here I was thinking he did something far more atrocious like murder somebody or incest...

I used to have one best friend in mainstream elementary school. We almost have the same interests and she mentioned to me that she used to live close to my house in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also while we were in the special education classroom, we do gestured to make us more understand each other. The hearing teacher punished us for doing the gesturing. It remind me of hearing Native children speaking their native language and then the teachers punished them for speaking the Native language. So they get the punishment, just like I get punished for gesturing. No wonder my best friend went to the Deaf school and she get to signed. I tried to go into the Deaf school but the Superintendent told my mother that I have to stay in the mainstream school. I was really upset at that. I miss my best friend because she moved away to the Deaf school and later got married and have children and now is living in Phoenix, Arizona. Then I had another best friend in mainstream high school. She and I talked a lot, but then we got into gesturing just like my other best friend. I love to sign, even we were not signing ASL. We went to the Deaf school for a Football game and homecoming. Funny, I did not see my best friend at the Deaf School. I don't remember. But we do have fun there. I was the one to leave Minnesota while my high school best friend stay behind in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was married and has children (I think she has three children plus her grandchildren). While she was married, her husband had a heart attack and died at home while she was trying to call 911 for help through relay service. So she became a widow early. She never married. She remain single ever since his death. I miss both of them. I had moved to New Mexico, then to Seattle, Washington for college (Deaf program), and then moved to Riverside, California after I met my first husband and back to New Mexico. I had been traveling around quite a bit. I did not have best friends for years. Yes, I do have friends but not best friends. It is good to meet new acquaintances and become friends as it is important to talk and discuss what you want to talk about. But not talk about secrets like Shel90. It is nice to be in the Deaf events or Deaf community where you can enjoy talking and gossiping a little.

To ChicagoBlue2. I think maybe your brother does not like having a stepmother married to your Dad. I think he wanted to take the place of his mother's last name instead of normally male name like his father. Like in memory of his mother whether she was alive or passed away. There is something both your brother and your father have a heated argument about feelings between your father and your real mother not being together anymore. Maybe he did not like the stepmother. :dunno: Why do we women have to use other male names instead of keeping our maiden names? So if your brother want to change his name from his father's surname, then that would be up to his choice or decision on choosing different name. Sorry that one of the siblings are having problem not being connected to your father. :(

Best friend #1 - we have known each other since I was born, I am one of very few people that understand him and his same sufferings for decades.

Best friend #2 - at GLBT youth group center in Summer 1998 (note: the hangout place welcomes straight guests) to hang out with my friends and I met my best friend thru our former friend.

Best friend #3 - we met in our Introduction to Sculpting Art class during the Summer 2000 course and we are still in contact ever since, sleepovers, and going to concerts together.

Best friend #4 - my lifetime partner, my soulmate, my man.

Best friend #5 - we met at the concert in 2007, she mistook me for her friend, we introduced one another and have been in contact ever since and I visit her home once in a while.

Best friend #6 and #7 - they are both considered a little brand new and I am watching closely on both of them.
